Parents need to know that this show underscores the importance of conservation and educates viewers about the wildlife victims of environmental imbalance. The hosts are reverent of all nature and openly share their distress at human involvement in its demise. Younger kids may be upset by scenes of animals killing and eating others, and parents may find themselves answering questions about animal behavior.
CAUGHT IN THE MOMENT is a moving documentary series that follows long-time friends and passionate environmentalists Tristan Bayer (son of renowned cinematographer Wolfgang Bayer) and Vanessa Garnick as they travel the world filming animals at critical times of life. A master of unique film techniques, Bayer employs various high-tech gadgets for awe-inspiring shots of his subjects. Garnick, a nature guide and conservationist, uses her wilderness expertise to find and explain the rarely seen wildlife behavior they document. Episodes have included Bayer and Garnick's chronicling of the "Arribada" (the simultaneous arrival of thousands of turtles to one Costa Rican beach to lay eggs) and tracking of migratory salmon in British Columbia to find and film the legendary and elusive Spirit Bear. Bayer's stunning film work is enhanced by captivating music, and each episode ends in a beautifully edited music video that encourages interest in conservation and offers thoughtful insights into the future of our environment.
Bayer and Garnick alternate narration duties, combining educational information with their own observations. Much of the time they're in front of the camera together, and their unscripted conversations give the show an intimate, relaxed feel. The two are clearly passionate about the preservation of the nature they experience, and it's easy to get caught up in their excitement over each new creature they encounter.
Families can talk about the balance of nature. What forces affect wildlife's ability to prosper? How has the presence of humans disrupted animals' ways of life? What can we do to preserve their habitats? Families can also talk about endangered species. How do these animals (or plants) become endangered? Where do these species live? What might happen if they're lost forever? What can we do to make sure this won't happen?
