What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this show centers on an African-American family whose parents are educated professionals. Their parenting methods are gentle and trusting, and the kids respond with respect and a clear realization of what's expected of them. Nearly all of the comedy in the show relates to the family and childrearing. Very little of the subject matter will concern parents, which makes it an excellent choice for families.

Positive messages: The show is the epitome of racial diversity, as the family is African-American and their friends are white, Asian, and Jewish. The Huxtables are exemplary role models in family life and the professional world.
Violence & scariness: Not applicable.
Sexy stuff: Kissing between teenagers and their significant others, but nothing more.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about the dynamics within the Huxtable home. How do the family members relate to each other? How realistic does their life seem? What types of challenges do they face that seem like your own? Are there any that you can't relate to? Families can also discuss the emphasis the Huxtables put on education. How can education change and improve a person's life?

What's the story?

What's the story?

The Huxtables live in Brooklyn, New York, and face challenges typical of most American families. Cliff (Bill Cosby), an obstetrician/gynecologist, and Clair (Phylicia Rashad), a lawyer, are the parents everyone longs for -- patient, understanding, and never lacking the humor essential in raising five kids. They rarely argue with each other or their kids, relying instead on communication to work through issues. The Huxtable kids -- Denise (Lisa Bonet), Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe), Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam), and rarely seen eldest daughter Sondra (Sabrina Le Beauf) -- have unique personalities, but their relationships are rarely marred by typical sibling bickering. Each is a high achiever (although their areas of interest vary widely) whose thoughtful behavior and emphasis on education are reflections of their parents'.

When it premiered in 1984, THE COSBY SHOW broke down racial barriers in TV by portraying an African-American family comfortably assimilated in upper-middle-class white America. Now showing in syndication (and on DVD), it continues to educate and entertain its audience. The show steers clear of any topics that might raise eyebrows, focusing mainly on the daily childrearing issues of a large family. With so many teens and preteens in Huxtable house, many of the issues they face relate to boy/girl relations, and it's refreshing to see a household in which kids willingly bring their worries and frustrations to their parents' attention.

Much of the subject matter, including Theo's battles to overcome dyslexia, is based on Cosby's own experiences as a father, and lessons reiterate the themes of self-respect and appreciation of others and emphasize healthy romantic relationships. The Cosby Show also offers the audience subtly placed tidbits of African-American history, music appreciation, and environmental awareness. Cliff's parents reminisce about marching with Martin Luther King, Jr., and Cliff and Clair often share their love of jazz and the blues with their kids.

Excellent show with great messages and great laughs.
This show is hilarious and wonderful. It has great lessons, and Bill cosby's genius just adds to the mix. Its wonderful, funny, fun, for everybody. Amd I mean everybody. Little kids will like it, teenagers will like it, adults will like it... its hilarious! Forget That's so Raven. This is one of the best TV shows tehre ever will be. Unfortuanetly I don't think its playing any longer, but just rent the seasons and that will be enough. There is some kissing and stuff like that between teenagers and the mom and dad, but ntohing much more than that. No language or violence of any kind, although the kids do occaisionally call eahc other mild names. But watch this. Its a great experience.

amazing show! just amazing!
The Cosby Show is by far my favorite classic TV show starring an almost-entirely black ensemble (Lisa Bonet, Geoffrey Owens, etc.) with good life lessons behind its back. Although it may not do very educational need (except for learning to cope with angst and such), there is more than a boatload of life lessons that work well even when you expect the show to be an all-out uproar. There are a lot of role models in the show that really appeal to all ages. Some weak violence, as far as I saw, a hole broken in the house ceiling, Cosby reporting a door hanging from a hinge and a splintered table, as well as an accidental slip causing a vase and such to drop. Some sexual matter that will slip over the heads of youngsters pretty easily, such as light kissing. (and that's how far it goes) Vanessa does say "shut up" once in an episode, and she does reference her possession of a Bobby Brown tape that Rudy stole. One episode actually shows Vanessa and Rudy learning French, which can allow kids to learn it, too. This show is a must-own, either on DVD, or available for Netflix owners. If you've turned away from this show, you're making a big mistake.

BEST SHOW EVER
The show is awesome but sometimes it has a little bit of innapropriate things for younger kids. It is like the best show I have ever seen. I record the show 2 times a day and watch two or three before I go to bed. Also I am so addicted to it and in my free time I will just sit there and watch it. I toatally reccomend this for about all ages. Any age group will think this show is so funny. Bill Cosby puts the final touch of making this show hillarious.
