Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–18

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Although the format puts the focus on designers' skills, the show isn't completely void of the backstabbing behavior that's become a hallmark of reality television. Still, in general, the designers are judged on the merits of their pieces instead of their personalities.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Some designs that come down the runway are revealing and could be considered "sexy." One contestant, who designs lingerie, says his friends call him "The Panty Christ."

  • Language:

Occasional use of words like "bitch," "hella," "sexy," "suck" (as in, "this sucks"), "hoochie," and "man berries." When words like "f--k" or "s--t" are used, which is rare, they're bleeped.
  • Consumerism:

Plenty of fashion designer name-dropping, plus a heavy promotional presence from Harper's Bazaar magazine, with one of the editors judging a weekly "Harper's Bazaar Mini Challenge." TRESemmé, which supplies stylists and products for each week's fashion show, gets similar treatment and even appears in short styling segments before rounds of commercials. Contestants also stay at the prominently featured Le Parker Meridien hotel. The kicker? Each week's winning design is manufactured and sold online at BravoTV.com.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Not much, though adult contestants might occasionally smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol in social situations.

What Parents Need to Know

About The Fashion Show

Parents need to know that the biggest concern here is consumerism -- viewers will be bombarded with haute couture, designer names, expensive looks, and hair styling products (courtesy of the show's sponsor, TRESemmé). A few challenges involve using inexpensive materials (such as a black T-shirt) to create cutting-edge items that look pricey, but in general, the goal seems to be high-end glamour and glitz. There's a little bit of audible strong language, too, as well as descriptive phrases like "man berries" (code for "testicles"), although stronger words like "f--k" and "s--t" are bleeped.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the role that fashion plays in modern society and why so many people are obsessed with staying on top of the latest trends. Is fashion an art form, or is it merely a trade that keeps clothes on our backs? Why do some designers seem more concerned with making a statement with their designs than with creating something that's truly functional, wearable, and actually looks good on a variety of body types? Does the amount of work and skill that goes into sewing an original outfit surprise you?
