What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series -- which follows hip-hop DJ Funkmaster Flex as he visits his famous friends to gush about their custom cars -- is full of product placement and branding. Flex talks up specific car brands, as well as his favorite auto shops and major parts suppliers, and he often promotes his friends' latest albums or other projects, too. There's not much in the way of sex, drinking, language, or violence, but while die-hard fans of custom cars may enjoy the show, there's little to interest others.

  • The series glamorizes the world of custom cars.
  • Not applicable.
  • Women in bikinis sometimes make brief appearances.
  • Not applicable.
  • Many types of cars are mentioned by name, including Impalas, Camaros, Mercedes, Ford F-150 pickups, Ferraris, and more. The names of custom auto shops are displayed on screen, and some major auto parts suppliers sponsor specific segments. Many of the mechanics wear shirts bearing the Funkmaster Flex logo, and the series promotes his personal brand. Flex often visits celebrity friends, including athletes and musicians, and he promotes their work while gushing over their custom cars.

What's the story?

Hip-hop DJ Funkmaster Flex loves cars, especially fancy ones. He loves big, powerful engines; the loudest sound system; sleek rims; and anything else that makes a ride look cool. FAST MACHINES WITH FUNKMASTER FLEX is devoted to his hobby and follows him as he visits car-loving friends, especially musicians and athletes, to gush over tricked-out rides. Flex and his buddies get excited looking under the hoods and examining the enormous speakers, and Flex spends plenty of time at the auto shop watching mechanics turn junkers into one-of-a-kind automobiles.

Is it any good?

Custom-car aficionados will find plenty to like here. Flex and his buddies discuss the features of different engine components and talk up their favorite car models. There's plenty of footage of people looking at engines and giving each other excited high fives. Flex also visits the shop, observing as skilled mechanics convert junkers into fully restored works of automotive art, though these sequences have little narration and provide almost no insight into the process.

The show's main focus is candid scenes in which professional athletes and hip-hop stars show off their car collections and take joyrides in these high-powered vehicles. Flex and his friends share a love for custom cars, and the show will probably appeal to people who appreciate this world. But if you don't know the difference between NOS and gas and you think the trunk is for storing luggage instead of an enormous sound system, this isn't the show for you.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the world of custom cars. Are you interested in building a completely tricked-out vehicle? Why? What kind of car would you make? How would your choice of cars reveal your personality? How do these vehicles compare to the fancy rides seen in TV series or movies? Why do you think this subculture is often linked to rap music?
