The Girls Next Door (E!)

common sense media says

Playboy fantasy becomes reality; not for kids.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this reality series openly celebrates sexual fantasy and sexual pleasure as positive things, which may be considered inappropriate by some viewers. That said, no explicit sexual behavior is seen on camera, and most nudity is blurred (although there are moments of partial nudity when women are in various stages of undress or sporting very revealing clothing). The show's discussions of nudity and sexual fantasy aren't appropriate for children, and parents may want to exercise caution even for older teens.

Positive messages: People are respected (for the most part), and violence and substance abuse aren't tolerated. But sexual freedom and sexual pleasure (of men, primarily) are viewed as positive things. Women are sexually objectified and fulfill the stereotype of the dumb blonde.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Partial nudity. Contains sexual innuendo (which may go over the head of young viewers) as well as specific references to sexual behavior. Some making out but no simulated sex acts. References to genitalia, sex toys, and other strong sexual subject matter. Tons of very skimpy outfits.
Language: Mostly mild: "damn," "crap," etc. Stronger curse words are bleeped out.
Consumerism: The Playboy logo, magazine, etc. are all clearly displayed. Hefner's favorite films are often highlighted.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Adult consumption of alcohol (beer, wine, hard liquor) is frequent. Adult use of tobacco products is sometimes noticeable, including pipe and cigar smoking.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about the different attitudes our society has about sex and sexual activity. Why are some people very open about sex while others aren't? When do nudity and sexual conduct become pornographic? Families can also discuss how women appear as sexual objects in the media and how this impacts how we look at and treat women in our society.

What's the story?

What's the story?

Showing viewers the reality of the Playboy fantasy, THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR is a series created by Playboy magazine founder and editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner that gives viewers an inside look at the inner workings of the infamous Playboy mansion. The show follows Hefner's three live-in girlfriends -- Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson -- as they live and travel with Hefner and help him host parties at the mansion. The ladies do everything from undressing and putting on S&M outfits and performing stripteases to wrapping Hef's birthday gifts with G-strings. In between are raunchy conversations that include discussing the desire to masturbate and questions about posing nude before bikini waxes became popular.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Like anything Playboy, the show is hedonistic and narcissistic and underscores (what else?!) Hefner's continuing love of beautiful women and sexual freedom. But even though these women are educated and have career goals (Bridget is working on her second master's degree, while Holly is earning her real estate license and Kendra is taking college courses online), their choice to live in the mansion's harem-like environment and their often-ditzy behavior make it hard to take them seriously. Unfortunately, they personify the stereotype of the empty-headed pinup girl whose mere presence serves to satisfy people's sexual fantasies. As a result, this series offers little more than an invitation to stop imagining and to actually look at real-life women as sexual objects.

I hate this show. Hugh Hefner is a jerk who loves girls for their body and makes sluts out of girls. This show basically shows the life of three girls who live in the playboy mansion. Though they learn scuba diving and get scuba certified, the show is still BAD. I don't think you would want your girls ending up playboy models. The girls are a embarrassment to girls everywhere and it's terrible how they get paid millions of dollars just to act like sluts and pose in a awful magazine and nurses and doctors save lives and don't get paid half that much. I sure hope they repent before they die.

good for nobody
I honestly hate this show, it is obviously staged, and not very good.

I Love This!!!
I love this show. It's defenitely NOT for kids under the age of 17! However, it's such a guilty pleasure and the girls are so much fun to watch. It's on late enough that most kids will already be in bed by the time it comes on. While the show has no real point (i.e. the girls don't really "do" anything) it's almost impossible not to enjoy this. It's not shameful to pose for Playboy, and these girls are defenitly not idiots. It's merely just an entertaining half hour of television.

love it
I love this show. It's not trashy and it's very entertaining. Holly, Bridget, and Kendra are actually very smart and nice, and act like normal people.

tell ur mom and dad you have to go to encino/melven elementary school for that!
i dislike a newer ones, This show is not for 7 and under because they can hear to try to curse or somethin for 13 and up fewer of some 16 and up fewer and 18 and up a lot but anyone under 50 should NOT watch it in my room! Violence (Not an issue.) Adult Behaviors (Pause): they can use to sing the adult word "se** chick/b***h". Language (Pause): Lots of profanity. Consumerism (Not an issue.) Drinking, Drugs, Smoking (Pause): Too Much for under 18s/21s. Negative Messages: Chat Rooms. Bad Role Models: BAD THINGS. Positive Messages: IM. Good Role Models (Pause): They were good at it so let's look for iffy ones: 7-8 (bad) 8.1-8.6 (Pretty Bad) 8.7-8.8 (Fine) 8.9-9 (Good/Very good/Great) 10-13 (the best) and for 14 and up now!

12 and older
I love the show and I don't think the it's incredibly inappropriate for 12 years and older. The girls cuss and some of the show is questionable but it's entertainment, it doesn't need to be perfect. I don't think it's gross or "icky" that the girls are in playboy or are dating and 80 year old but I am sure some strict parents wont even let their teens watch it. Don't forget, by the way, that playboy has a large audience. It's not just naked women. Its a business they work for playboy. In the former seasons Holly worked and helped pick the girls and pictures and in this season Crystal works in the scrapbook room. Anyway what I'm saying is I thing the show is for 12 and older.
