What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series' adult humor revolves around the sexual interests of older women. It's filled with sexual innuendo and comical descriptions of sexual acts that will most likely go over the head of younger viewers, but parents may still want to exercise caution. Parents should also know that the show offers a positive look at women and senior citizens and raises awareness about the issues that seniors face in today's society.

  •   It's a comedy, but it sends an upbeat and positive message about aging while highlighting some of the problems people inevitably face as we get older. Serious topics like AIDS, gambling, and adultery are discussed.
  • The cast is a group of strong older women. Sophia has a sharp tongue, Dorothy is a recovering gambler, Blanche is promiscuous, and Blanche is naive (and often the brunt of the other's jokes).
  • Not applicable.
  • Strong suggestive dialogue, sexual innuendo, and comical discussions of sexual activity. Some making out, but no simulated sex.

What's the story?

THE GOLDEN GIRLS premiered in 1985, following the comedic escapades of four mature women living as housemates in Miami, Florida. The Golden foursome includes headstrong Dorothy Petrillo Zbornak (Bea Arthur, known for her lead role in the 1970s sitcom Maude), her spunky and sharp-tongued mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), naïve Rose Nylund (Betty White of The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and sexually liberated Blanche Devereaux (Maude co-star Rue McClanahan). The four leads are a distinctive group of women who drive each other crazy on a daily basis. They're plagued by Dorothy's scheming ex-husband Stanley Zbornak (Herb Edelman) and are sometimes visited by -- to Blanche's delight -- eligible neighbor Dr. Harry Weston (Richard Mulligan of Empty Nest). But while arguments and insults form a large part of the women's relationship with each other, they're truly committed to each other as loving, loyal friends who support one another even through the most difficult times.

Is it any good?

This funny, sexually charged series shows viewers that life not only continues after 50 but is actually rich, fulfilling, and, most of all, fun -- especially when you have good friends to share it with. Dating, sexual activity, adultery, abortion, and AIDS are some of the many issues the ladies chat about -- often around the kitchen table over a piece of cheesecake. This series also looks at many aspects of aging, which range from the comical (sagging chests, drooping bottoms) to the serious (rising health care costs) to the tragic (the rising incidence of homelessness among seniors). But The Golden Girls is also a celebration of life, reminding audiences that women in their golden years are strong, sexy, and beautiful.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about how senior citizens are viewed by society. What are some of the issues that affect the lives of older members of the community? Do people do enough to make sure that seniors are respected and that their needs are addressed? Families can also discuss the importance of loyalty and the value of friendship.

The Golden Girls, a show for the whole family.
The Golden Girls is simply, one of the best shows that ever aired on TV. Yes, they talk about sex. Yes, they use mild language. But it shows us that life really starts at 50, and if you have friends to share it with, it can be incredilby fulfilling. So, watch it, and see for yourself how they teach us about caring for older people, how problems often have solutions, and how to live life to the fullest. Now, tell me kids shouldn't watch that.

The perfect "everything" show!
I've only watched a couple of episodes of this seemling funny series, but it seems like everyone who watches it, or has watched it in the past LOVED it! This used to be one of my mom's favourite shows, and I can see why. It's comical, but it deals with petty to serious issues, and touches on everything in a humorous way. An awesome show for older pre-teens, teens and adults!

FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY!
I really enjoy this show. It of course has the amazing Betty White in it! Its just the simple. but crazy life of 4 older women that live together. There are some sexual content at times, and mild language, but this is a very cute and funny show.

Good for teenagers, but not for children
The Golden Girls is a classic '80s sitcom. There's a lot of sexual innuendo that young children won't understand, but teenagers who've had education in sex should be fine.

An innovative classic, but not for everyone
Without the iconic Golden Girls, there's a high possibility that other iconic shows like Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives would never have come into existence. Why, some of you may ask? The Golden Girls were a group of women (albeit senior citizens) who were very close to each other and frequently talked about personal issues including sexually-related ones. This unique setup allowed Sex and the City to take it and explore R-rated HBO territory with it, and for Desperate Housewives to later re-imagine it within a satirical format. Additionally, The Golden Girls pushed the boundaries of network TV and brought up taboo topics that had never been discussed before on American TV. But what made the show so memorable was the cast chemistry between the four "girls": Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia. Every character brought something to the table (literally!) and, along with razor-sharp writing, created an innovative show unlike any other on TV. Due to sexually suggestive material, The Golden Girls may not be for everyone. But it's certainly a classic that many young people have recently discovered in reruns thanks to the current Betty White craze.
