What parents need to know

Parents need to know that overall, this reality series about a young L.A. fashion designer is pretty mild -- especially for MTV. It focuses a lot on family relationships, hard work, and professionalism. That said, expect some tense moments and mild arguing, especially between Jazmin and her mother, who's also her business manager. Alcohol is served at fashion events (where you may also see some scantily clad models), and there's occasional strong language.

Positive messages: Emphasizes the importance of hard work and family support -- though sometimes personal issues get in the way of both.
Positive role models: While young and at times inexperienced, Jazmin is a hard worker with a strong professional ethic. Susan sometimes has a hard time separating her role as Jazmin’s mother and as her business manager, but overall she means well.
Violence: Some mild arguing, often between Jazmin and her mother.
Sex: Some mild sexual innuendo. Fashion shows sometimes feature women in skin-revealing outfits; male models are often seen with bare torsos.
Language: Words like “hell” are audible.
Consumerism: The series is a clear promotional vehicle for Jazmin and her clothing line, Li Cari.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Liquor (cocktails, champagne) is served at fashion events.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how this show compares to some of MTV's other reality shows. Is there a certain type of show you expect from MTV?
  • Why do you think a young professional like Jazmin would agree to be featured on a reality show? Is it for promotional purposes, or are there other reasons?
  • What kind of work and skills go into becoming a fashion designer? Is it as glamorous as the runway shows we see on television? Do you think this show offers a “real” example of the kind of work that fashion designers do?

What's the story?

What's the story?
HOUSE OF JAZMIN follows the life of 20-year-old Jazmin Whitley, a successful up-and-coming L.A. fashion designer who wants to make her label, Li Cari, a household name. She runs her business with the help of her mother/business partner, Susan Costa, and best friend, Morgan Weirich. Younger brother Joey Costa helps out as their in-house photographer, while Jazmin's grandmother, “Nonna” Licari, offers lots of food and moral support. Life is never dull for Jazmin as she juggles her time sketching new designs, fitting models for runway shows, and hanging out with her friends in the sun.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

By looking through the eyes of a likable young woman just starting out in the business, the show offers a fairly fresh glimpse into the kind of work that goes into fashion and clothing design. It also shows some of the business' less glamorous side, including the effort of planning just a single fashion event and the kinds of pressures that designers face when attempting to promote their label.

While the series lacks some of the drama of fashion-themed reality competitions offer, it still highlights some behind-the-runway energy. And the unique family dynamics create some humor as well as tension, especially when Susan blurs the line between mother and business manager. Bottom line? House of Jazmin will definitely appeal to young fashion hopefuls, and it's not too MTV-edgy for them to watch.

I like the show. It shows an up and coming designer that is young and full with ideas. I think it's awesome that MTV took out the time to showcase someone that not to many people know about, and I can't wait to start wearing her clothing line after I have this baby.
