What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this family-friendly reality series offers some funny scenes involving interviews with and pranks involving children. Some jokes contain mild sexual innuendo, political commentary, and other adult-oriented references that will fly over the heads of young viewers. Mentions of popular TV shows, movies, and celebs are also frequent. Some of the pranks may spook very young kids, but overall it’s pretty tame.

  • Series is designed to entertain, not educate.
  • Underscores the positives (and entertainment value) of children’s insight and imagination.
  • Garrett clearly likes to goof around with children, but also encourages them to be polite, respectful, and to try new things.
  • Kids sometimes throw things or pull other stunts, but they aren't violent. Some kids get frightened or surprised by some of the pranks.
  • Some plays on words (like “picking up chicks”) that will go over the heads of most young children. Pranks sometimes deal with dating, and jokes sometimes deal with underwear.
  • Not applicable.
  • References are made to popular TV shows like Glee, films like E.T., and talk show hosts like Tyra Banks. Many Los Angeles locales, including Skooby Hotdogs, Carneys, and Universal Studios are sometimes prominently featured.

What's the story?

The reality series I KID WITH BRAD GARRETT attempts to look into the minds of kids in order to learn more about how they think. Actor Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) spends time talking and hamming it up with kids in order to get a sense of how they see the world. He also plays a few tricks on them to see how they will react. It gets a little wild at times, but in the end it’s all in good fun.

Is it any good?

Pranks and silliness are the name of the game as Garrett interacts with children in both group and individual settings, and talks to them about things ranging from trying new foods to their imaginary friends. The hidden camera footage is funny, too.

Many of the host’s jokes contain some political and sexual references that will appeal to adults while going over kids’ heads. A few of the featured kids’ overactive imaginations lead to some colorful (albeit manufactured) stories about real-life events. A few of the pranks might be a little scary for younger viewers, too. But overall, the show offers lots of good family fun.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about playing jokes on people. How does it feel to have a practical joke played on you? How should a person handle being the subject of a joke? When does a prank go too far?

  • Is there a time when using your imagination isn't appropriate? When does using your imagination to tell a story or to describe something seem more like a lie? In what situations should you try to stick to what is real vs. make believe?
