What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this reality show about comedian Kathy Griffin features lots of cursing, though the most offensive words are bleeped. The humor is adult-oriented and covers sex, alcohol, politics, and intimate relationships. Griffin makes fun of everybody, including her parents and her fans. Griffin is honest about her search for fame and admits that her occasional altruistic acts are merely hunts for media attention.

  • Griffin's life seems pretty shallow, with the constant push for fame overriding all else. Her self-deprecating humor largely centers on Hollywood and celebrities. She leans left politically and voices anti-Bush, pro-gay, pro-women's issues stances.
  • Not applicable.
  • Griffin makes jokes about sex occasionally, but nothing graphic.
  • Griffin curses constantly. The biggies are bleeped, but "bitch," "whore," "ass," etc. are all common.
  • Luxury brand names, like Prada, are mentioned occasionally.
  • Social drinking, plus Griffin makes fun of how much her elderly parents drink.

What's the story?

In Kathy Griffin's Bravo reality show MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST, viewers watch this fame-obsessed comedian's continual efforts to remain in the public eye, which are often embarrassing failures. Griffin doesn't wallow in her disappointments too deeply, but viewers get to see moments that surely hammer at her self-esteem, as when she uses a charity event being held at her home as leverage to get free products and discounted floor samples. Griffin's even-tempered husband, Matt, provides a refreshing relief to Kathy's demanding, high-energy nature in early episodes, but they've since split up. And her parents are wonderfully supportive and adorable -- despite the fact that even they aren't spared Griffin's sharp-tongued mockery.

Is it any good?

Watching D-List gives viewers a peek into what lower-level celebrities must have to do to make money and stay relevant. It's exhausting work, and you have to both admire the effort and wonder why the attention is so important. While it's fun to watch Griffin keep up the fight, perhaps the show will give fame-hungry teens a tiny glimpse into the real -- and often unglamorous -- world of celebrity.

I love Kathy Griffin
Common Sense is acting like she is compleatly shallow and only cares about herself. She is actually very close with her mom (and her dad before he passed away). She has performed for the troops in Iraq, performed in an army hospital, and performed to raise money for homeless gay youth. She is a big supporter of gay rights, and has taken photographs for the NOH8 Campaigne. She really has a big heart and really cares about people. AND she is pretty much the funniest person on Earth. This show is great. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, and Kathy Griffin always makes me extreamly happy.

Perfect for everyone :)
Common Sense obviously has never seen the show. She is a comedian so sure she overdoes things, she is only joking. She loves her parent, assistance, and her gays. She's a wonderfully funny woman and I love this show.

VERY funny.
This show is funny, very funny. I am mature, so I get the comedy. But there are always some stupid immature kids out there who don't know anything. It's a funny show, I laughed so hard I couldn't breath.
