Parents need to know that teens won't glean many positive messages from this brand-heavy reality show that largely continues the antics of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Social drinking and sexual innuendo play heavily in the proceedings, and the girls sometimes overindulge to the point of illness, memory loss, and poor decision-making. They also speak frankly about sexual matters, spouting sentences like "It's so obvious she wants her vajayjay" and "I do not need to see someone's balls if I'm not boning him." Obviously, the language in general is pretty salty, with bleeped swearing and audible insults like "bitch-ass whore."
In KOURTNEY AND KHLOE TAKE MIAMI, West Coast sisters Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian move east to the "Party City" to open up a new branch of their upscale Dash boutique. Their sister, Kim, makes an appearance from time to time. But the focus is mostly on how these stylish sibs balance business matters with their busy social lives (they party a lot) -- and Khloe's side career as a late-night radio talk show host.
Trying to force a spin-off from a show that wasn't that good to begin with might have seemed like a good idea to producer Ryan Seacrest. But for most viewers, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami will be a lukewarm guilty pleasure at best. The show's thinly veiled attempt to drive traffic to the sisters' pricey boutique is practically transparent, and they're ultimately not that interesting to watch.
It's a shame that the Kardashian sisters' party-hard lifestyle -- and the iffy behavior that comes along with it -- takes away from their more admirable qualities. They clearly have at least some degree of business savvy, and that's a great thing for teen girls to see. But Kourtney and Khloe seem far more interested in clubbing, shopping, and acting up for the cameras -- and looking impossibly fabulous while doing it.
Families can talk about how drinking and partying are portrayed on the show. What are some of the real-life consequences of drinking too much? Do those consequences seem to apply to the Kardashian sisters?
Do you think the Kourtney and Khloe (and sometimes Kim) you see on the show are really being "real"? Are they playing up drama for the cameras, or is a case of what you see is what you get?
Are Kourtney and Khloe positive celebrity role models? Is one a better role model than the other? How does their headline-grabbing sister, Kim, stack up?
Why are the Kardashian sisters famous? Do you think they deserve the publicity they get? How could a show like this help their business grow?
