Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The show sends teens negative messages about drinking and partying, even though the sisters are old enough to imbibe. It also glamorizes the sisters' high-rolling lifestyles and sets some unrealistic beauty standards.
  • Role models:

The sisters aren't all bad -- they run a successful business and seem to have a pretty genuine relationship. But their after-hours behavior and occasional lapses in judgment leave a lot to be desired. Kourtney, the older sister, tends to be the voice of reason.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Lots of sexually charged kissing and "hooking up" in bars and clubs -- and, in one instance, Kourtney kisses a bisexual girl she met in her art class. The girls also throw around sexual terms like "butt plug," "vajayjay," and "balls," and Khloe interviews a "sex expert" on her radio show.
  • Language:

Words like "ass" and "bitch" are audible and are sometimes combined into insults, as in "bitch-ass whore." Stronger words -- like "f--k," "s--t," and "c--k" -- are bleeped.
  • Consumerism:

The girls' Dash boutique (where a dress can cost as much as $500 or more) is heavily promoted, and about half of the action takes place in the store. They also drop cash for luxury brands like Jaguar, Porsche, and Christian Louboutin shoes.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

The girls (who are both of legal age) frequent bars and clubs, do shots, and often overindulge -- sometimes to the point of vomiting and/or not being able to recall how the evening ended. In one episode, Khloe finds a vial of cocaine in a dressing room and brings it to work. But as a result, her radio show is suspended, and she's forced to take a drug test.

What Parents Need to Know

About Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami

Parents need to know that teens won't glean many positive messages from this brand-heavy reality show that largely continues the antics of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Social drinking and sexual innuendo play heavily in the proceedings, and the girls sometimes overindulge to the point of illness, memory loss, and poor decision-making. They also speak frankly about sexual matters, spouting sentences like "It's so obvious she wants her vajayjay" and "I do not need to see someone's balls if I'm not boning him." Obviously, the language in general is pretty salty, with bleeped swearing and audible insults like "bitch-ass whore."

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how drinking and partying are portrayed on the show. What are some of the real-life consequences of drinking too much? Do those consequences seem to apply to the Kardashian sisters?
  • Do you think the Kourtney and Khloe (and sometimes Kim) you see on the show are really being "real"? Are they playing up drama for the cameras, or is a case of what you see is what you get?
  • Are Kourtney and Khloe positive celebrity role models? Is one a better role model than the other? How does their headline-grabbing sister, Kim, stack up?
  • Why are the Kardashian sisters famous? Do you think they deserve the publicity they get? How could a show like this help their business grow?

I love this show... and I'm 13. E! is basically my life and I watch it all the time, almost every night I fall asleep to it too. I don't think the show is that bad but I might just say that because it is my favorite show along with Keeping up with the Kardashians. I have been watching it since I was 11 or 12... I cant remember my friend introduced me to E! and now I cant stop! IM ADDICTED!

A Lot Worse Then 'Kardashians', but not in quality!

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami will definitely pull in the fans of 'Keeping Up', but this is a ton worse than the first one. A lot more sexual references, not that much more language, but a lot mroe consumerism considering the fact that the overall reason the girls went to Miami was to start the new DASH, and it's up and running. Drinking is noticeable and at some points overdone. Going to bars, etc. Messages are totally mixed. Like the above, the girls are sucessful with their stores and aren't living like Paris, but they aren't perfect role models (or decent ones at that). But their successes, to some, can weigh out the negatives. Khloe was arrested for DUI earlier, which viewers are aware of. The girls aren't the best role models in this series. Overall, the show is just as good as 'Keeping Up' in quality, but if you want a more appropriate choice, this is not your answer.
