parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this animated series follows the life of a 13-year-old alien who's trying to learn some life lessons while having a little fun. The show is both charming and heartwarming as it tells the age-old stories of adolescence. Kids will enjoy watching Lloyd deal with the same kinds of things they do -- friends, pressure, embarrassment, forgiveness, and even how to handle getting rejected by your first crush.

Positive messages: Lloyd is a relatable character who faces a lot of the issues real adolescents deal with. The series teaches useful lessons about responsibility, thinking before you act, and taking friends' recommendations with a grain of salt.
Violence & scariness: No graphic violence, but Lloyd does get teased by the school bully.
Sexy stuff: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

More on Lloyd in Space

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the daily challenges Lloyd faces as an alien teen in the distant future. How does his life compare to contemporary kids' lives? Does being an alien set him apart from his peers? Do you think the future will be easier or more difficult? Why? Do you think teenagers will be the same? What futuristic innovations do you hope will happen in your lifetime?

What's the story?

What's the story?
LLOYD IN SPACE follows the adventures of Lloyd Nebulon (voiced by Courtland Mead), a socially awkward yet endearing extraterrestrial teenager who's learning what it means to grow up. Sick of being stuck at home (which happens to be the Intrepidville Space Station), Lloyd yearns to see the universe. In their desire to escape boredom, he and his three friends -- Eddie (Justin Shenkarow), Kurt (Bill Fagerbakke), and Douglas (Pamela Hayden) -- search for fun in all the wrong places, with their escapades often ending in near disaster. But Lloyd's mom, Commander Nora Li Nebulon (April Winchell), always saves the day and gives Lloyd a perspective on what it means to be responsible, to think before you act, and to take mischievous friends' recommendations with a grain of salt.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Although Lloyd in Space is set in the future, it's not about intergalactic battles or laser guns -- kids looking for fast-paced sci-fi adventure and edge-of-your-seat storylines won't find them here. Instead, by highlighting the challenges and rewards of being a teen, the show focuses on the universal experience of what it feels like to be caught between childhood and adulthood.

Lloyd may not be a typical hero, but his charm is found in the way viewers can identify with his gangly, insecure-but-big-hearted existence as a not-so-popular adolescent. In an entertainment world full of cool, glossy, and unrealistically perfect-looking teens, Lloyd is a fresh hero who will feel comfortingly familiar.
