What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series carries on the tradition begun in the beloved books it's based on. Wild teacher Miss Frizzle takes her students on adventures of every kind, teaching them (and viewers) about science as they go. At times the lessons may be a bit hard to follow, but there's plenty of learning and fun to be had.

Educational value: The show -- which is based on a series of fun and educational books -- encourages learning about all aspects of science.
Positive messages: The show strongly promotes curiosity, experimentation, and learning about science.
Positive role models: Miss Frizzle, though unconventional, is an intrepid heroine, dedicated to teaching and learning. Her kids are a great bunch, too.
Violence & scariness: Some very mild peril during some adventures.
Sexy stuff: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about the explorations that the class goes on in each episode.
  • Also, what kind of field trips does your child go on? What would their dream field trip be? Ask your kids what they learned about at the end of each episode. Did they study that subject in school?

What's the story?

What's the story?
THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS is quite a vehicle. At the command of schoolteacher Miss Frizzle (voiced by Lily Tomlin), it can transform into any possible shape and size (including a "bathysphere" shaped like a bathtub) and carry a group of kids off to adventures in space, under the sea, or even inside the human body.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

There's lots of fun and learning along the way, though at times the pace is so fast that it can be easy to miss some of the educational value. Some of the effects used in the animation can be pretty strange, too -- the sight of a group of mussels with the heads of children, each wearing a jet pack, isn't something you see every day, but it will keep kids and parents entertained.

The Magic School Bus series strictly follows the formula of the book series created by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. From dinosaurs to beehives, kids get an inside peek into the inner workings, history, and function on a wide range of topics.

Educational and fun!
My five-year old son loves this show. And his two-year old sister will watch it with him without complaint. He finds it interesting, is thrilled when it comes on TV, and he's always telling me about things he learned on the show.

Education on TV! It exists!
This show is good for educating little children. Many shows are violent but this cartoon explains how things work and has many science topics for kids under the age of 10. It is a basic show with some humor and is safe for younger children to watch. I give it an A+!

Fun, educational show.
This is a classic show. Its far from perfect, but it does make learning fun, so I give it points for that.

A great learning tool
This series is better for the older crowd because it talks about subjects meant for 3rd-5th graders. It talks about the human body and electricity. There are also a few social studies episodes too!

hate it more than anything
i HATED THIS WHEN I WAS LITTLE parents love it, and kids may say they like it but they really don't. sorry moms and dads, they DONT !

My daughter's favorite show
It amazes me how many science stories she tells us after watching Magic School Bus. I don't know how to break it to her that real school isn't quite going to be like Ms. Frizzle's classroom!

Best show ever
I remember watching this show all the time when I was a kid. It was the best on PBS!!! It kicked Athur's butt. Only Wishbone parralled in greatness. I can still remember some of the stuff it taught me as a kid. I'd even watch it today!

A great educational thrill ride for kids!
This show brings back so many memories! I love it! It is very educational because it teaches you about science and stuff! Kids 5 and up are A-OK! Make this a must see for your kids (if you are a parent). Although the animation might be outdated (the show was made in the 90's).

A Great Show
This is truly a great show. It manages to explain complex science topics well.

My son (8)and daughter (4) love this show and so do I! Great for educational value and they don't even know they're learning...that's the best part.

I use to watch this in kindergarten
This is a great show on discovory kids. This show is a show on dk that looks like it's rated TV-G. It's so kidish but they teach all age science. This show is rated right, unlike the other TV-G shows on dk. The other shows with the rating TV-G look TV-Y. The other shows like hi-5 and stuff are a bunch of crap. I mean come on. Im 13 years old, and there is no way all ages are going to watch those other TV-G shows on dk.
