What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series features former Saved by the Bell actor Mario Lopez and his girlfriend preparing for the birth of their child. It is generally positive, but the issues discussed here, like adult relationships, pregnancy, parenthood, aren’t intended for younger viewers. A few corporate logos are prominently visible

  • The series highlights some of the major changes young men are faced with when transitioning from a single lifestyle to that of partner and father. It also underscores the importance of balancing work and personal responsibilities.
  • Mario Lopez exhibits a desire to be a good father and partner. Lopez and Mazza are not married.
  • Lopez is an amateur boxer, and is sometimes shown sparring in the ring (wearing protection).
  • Contains some mild sexual innuendo (hugging, kissing). Issues relating to pregnancy are sometimes discussed, including references to the size of Mazza’s breasts.

What's the story?

MARIO LOPEZ: SAVED BY THE BABY follows actor, dancer, and host Mario Lopez as he transitions from bachelorhood to fatherhood. Cameras follow the celeb as he and girlfriend Courtney Mazza, who is seven-months pregnant at the start of the series, prepare for the arrival of their baby and manage new parenthood. Lopez quickly discovers that he’s got a lot to learn about being a dad. He also has to figure out how to juggle his responsibilities towards his family with the demands of his Hollywood career. But he’s committed to learning everything he can, and being the best parent and partner that he can be.

Is it any good?

The reality doc offers a behind-the-scenes look at some of the changes single men are faced with when they are in a committed relationship and/or become new parents. It also highlights the adjustments people must make in order to balance a demanding career and personal hobbies with family responsibilities.

It’s pretty mild, and positive, too, thanks to Mario Lopez’s pleasant and easygoing personality. But the show isn’t really isn't geared towards kids, with discussions about parenting and adult relationships making up the majority of the drama. Nevertheless, teen and adult fans will probably enjoy what they see.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the adjustments and compromises adults make when they have a family. What kinds of things do people have to change in their lives when they become parents? Parents: What kinds adjustments did you make when you had kids?

  • Life events like being pregnant and preparing for parenthood are very personal experiences. Do you think the conversations and events taking place here are genuine? Or do you think certain things are manipulated to create a more dramatic reality experience? If so, how?

  • Why do you think Lopez and his girlfriend agreed to do a reality show? What benefits does it offer? Can you think of any drawbacks? Would you ever want to be on a reality show?

Unwatchable--listening to Mario Lopez drone on and on. Sarah Palin is definitely more interesting. Could kick up some body image issues for boys (and also men).
