What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series is filled with standard cartoon violence like extensive falls, collisions, and fistfights. Occasionally, there's also unrealistic use of firepower; in one scene, a cannon fires children instead of cannonballs (the kids emerge unscathed). Flapjack's adoration of Captain K'Nuckles is disturbing since the captain is selfish, dishonest, and unkind and routinely encourages Flapjack to ignore Bubbie's motherly advice. The series does attempt to convey positive messages about good social behavior, but the lessons are typically overshadowed by the rest of the content and the show's chaotic pace.

  • The show is focused on entertaining rather than educating.
  • Attempts at promoting positive messages related to social behavior
("It's not nice to brag," for instance) come across as an afterthought amid the cartoon chaos. Body humor (mostly gas) is a common source of humor. The show sometimes makes light of sensitive content; in one segment, for example, young kids are forced to labor in the belly of a mechanical whale before being shot out of a cannon.
  • Young Flapjack idolizes Captain K'Nuckles, who isn't a very good role model -- he exaggerates his own
grandeur and is often at odds with the much more nurturing, motherly Bubbie over
    what's appropriate for Flapjack.
  • Standard cartoon violence -- extensive falls, collisions, and hand-to-hand battles -- none of which results in injury. Firepower includes guns (they're fired to signal the start of a race and aren't aimed at anyone) and cannons, which in at least one scene are used to fire kids at an opponent.

What's the story?

Flapjack (voiced by Thurop Van Orman) is a young boy with an oversized thirst for adventure. Raised at sea by gentle talking whale Bubbie (Roz Ryan) -- whose cavernous insides provide a cozy home for her adopted son -- Flapjack's eyes are opened when he meets an old pirate named Captain K'Nuckles (Brian Doyle-Murray), who fills his head with exaggerated tales of his exciting experiences at sea. Now Flapjack's blind adoration sets him adrift with the crooked captain in one sticky situation after another, despite the fact that Bubbie -- and everyone else in Stormalong Harbor -- sees K'Nuckles for the dishonest scoundrel he truly is.

Is it any good?

On the surface, there's nothing overtly worrying about THE MARVELOUS MISADVENTURES OF FLAPJACK, but there are some underlying issues that parents may take issue with. Poor Flapjack is caught in the middle between two adults -- both of whom he loves and admires for different reasons -- who bombard him with conflicting ideas of what it means to be a good, upstanding person. Bubbie tries her best to teach him that charity and friendship can solve any conflict, but it's usually Captain K'Nuckles' irresponsible quest for mischief that wins out.

There's also a fair amount of standard fare cartoon violence (fistfights, crashes, that sort of thing) and some use of guns and cannons, but the fact that no one is ever hurt just underlines the show's improbability. Precious little about this series is relatable to real life, and even attempts to include positive lessons are lost amid its chaotic pace. Though the target audience of young tweens -- especially boys -- might have fun with Flapjack's adventures, in the end they'd be better served by a show with a little more substance.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about role models. How does the media affect our views of model behavior? Do you think famous people are held to a different set of standards than the rest of us are? Is that fair?

  • Who are some of your role models? What characteristics do you admire in
them? How would you feel if someone you looked up to did something
    wrong?

Reality Ain't All Smiles and Rainbows, Folks
This show definitely has it's dark undertones. There is no denying it, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad, does it? Some of you may remember "Aaah Real Monsters!", "Courage the Cowardly Dog", and "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy". If you can recall, they all had their fair share of creepy, scary moments, but as far as I know, they didn't do any harm. Why should "Flapjack"? I realize, the characters are not the best role models in the world, but that's what's so great about this show--it's a good dose of reality. The characters aren't the typical "bad role model characters". They actually have a great deal of depth for a children's cartoon. Bubby, Flapjack's adoptive mother, while being an eavesdropper and frequently hypocritical, she just wants the best for her son and will go to great lengths to ensure his safety and always has his best-interest at heart, even though she may poorly express this. The relationship between Bubby and Flapjack proves that you do not have to be related to be family. K'Nuckles is another story. He's a drunkard, a liar, a theif, a bum, and a failure who often sweeps young Flapjack away in his highly-exaggerated (or completely made-up) tales of adventure, which blinds Flapjack from seeing his true character. Despite being a bit of a jerk and quite the anti-role model, he does express great love for Flapjack, even if he doesn't want to admit to it or if his methods of expressing his feelings for Flapjack are highly obscure. There are multiple references to his alcoholism through-out the series. I think his relationship with Flapjack proves that even less than perfect people can still be loving people. And of course, Flapjack is a painfully-naive wanna-be-adventurer. He's very dedicated and tries his best at everything he does. He's often swayed in the wrong direction by the ole captain, but isn't necessarily a bad kid. There are a few minor characters peppered in--there's the bartender, Peppermint Larry and his (possibly fictional) manipulative, controlling wife, 'Candy Wife', and Doctor Barber, the surgery-obsessed local doctor/barber. Many characters are illiterate. The show puts heavy-importance on creativity and adventure, which is always a good message for the children. The main trio have all shown dedication and hardwork and have promoted to "do the right thing" such as when a group of children make fun of Bubby and K'Nuckles, instead of going along with them for the popularity, Flapjack stands up for his friends, even after being called names. Characters have gotten "high" and "drunk" are more than one occasion. All in all, I think it's a good show with good messages and role-models, by they are often obscured by character flaws or reality itself.

Some Suggestive Nonsense
I was watching one episode, and Captain K Knuckles fell in in love with a mirror. The mirror is dressed like a lady and Captain K Knuckles had his shirt up the whole episode. Flapjack hides in the covers of the mirror, and Captain K Knuckles married the mirror(probably Flapjack, too). Flapjack has to act like a mom and raise some kids. There was a naked baby in one episode. Knuckles cursed in episode(We could not hear him and not understand him). Besides that, it should be TV-Y and for age 4.

The pancake was over cooked, a while ago.
Worst Show ever! You can't live in a whale, drink candy, and what kind of a name is Flapjack? A three year old can come up with abetter name then that. Also, why does Knuckles get in trouble for what Flapjack does? Besides Flapjack's laugh makes me want to go listen to Rebecca Black!! If you want your kids to watch this, just have them watch paint dry instead. Trust me, that has more depth then this excuse for a cartoon.

Awesome, but dark.
This show is pretty awesome in a teen's opinion, but the show may be too dark for what Common Sense Media is saying it is targeted for. I'd say a tween audience would be good.

Scary and a waste of time.
This show is creepy, disgusting, and scary. If I had kids I woul never let them watch this. There is absolutley no point to this show and it's disgusting. The show is graphic, like when it has close ups of characters faces. I would suggest not letting your kids melt their brains by watching this.

I made a huge mistake watching this show!
I used to like this show but now I realize I made a huge mistake when I watched cartoon network, This show is dumb! There was a reason it was canceled. So happy that Mr. Annoying/Flapjack is out of my life forever! Why does everybody like this show? Its so gross, boring and theres too much language kids can't use, I heard potty humor plenty of times in this crappy TV show! Glad it was cancelled because it was horrible!!! So horrible I wanted to murder myself in the living room.
