Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The focus is on getting even instead of trying to work through your differences. In the end, revenge trumps everything, and the heroine makes sure that her enemy pays for her "crimes."
  • Role models:

Some role models are obviously negative, bullying others and -- in the serial killer's case -- murdering the innocent. Others have positive intentions but ultimately make negative choices -- including consciously leaving others to die.
  • Violence:

Plenty of grizzly slayings, including stabbings and a beheading. Blood is sprayed, pooled, dripped, etc.
  • Sex:

Some sexually charged kissing and making out, plus a few mentions of getting "nookie" and  "hooking up." Two friends make a pact to sleep with each other if they don't find mates on their own by the end of high school. There's also a brief comic scene in which a teenage boy is discovered looking at porn (which is unseen and only heard via moaning) online.
  • Language:

Audible language includes words like "hell," "damn," "ass," and "bitch," plus iffy phrases such as "screw off," "psycho skank," and "trashy-ass."
  • Consumerism:

A girl receives a BMW as a 16th birthday present, and the logo is visible.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Some teen characters drink champagne in a limo on the way to the party. Another smuggles in a bottle of liquor to try to spike a nonalcoholic drink. In a flashback, a teenager is shown smoking a cigarette.

What Parents Need to Know

About My Super Psycho Sweet 16

Parents need to know that this made-for-TV movie about a Sweet 16 birthday party gone horribly, horribly wrong directly targets teens but has iffy messages concerning bullying and revenge. Violent imagery runs the gamut from stabbings, slayings, and stranglings to a graphic beheading ... and there's plenty of blood to go along with it all. There are also some sexually charged situations (making out, etc.), salty language ("ass," "bitch," etc.) and some teen characters who drink alcohol, although no one ever gets out of control. (Those who do drink? Let's just say they don't fare well.)

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how accurately the movie portrays high school life -- particularly when it comes to cliques. Does your school have exclusive groups, or is it easy to move between social circles? Is the "queen bee" character an overblown stereotype, or do girls like that exist in real life?
  • How does the movie address the topics of teen drinking and bullying?
  • Do you agree with Skye's ultimate choice when it comes to saving -- or not saving -- Madison's life? Do you think she made the right decision?
