Parents need to know that this preschool-targeted series is filled with positive messages about teamwork, friendship, and appreciation for people’s unique talents. The characters learn that their powers are more effective when they join forces, reminding kids that people’s individual skills are to be celebrated and are made to complement each other. The villainous characters’ antics are little more than pranks; they wield non-threatening "weapons" like strong puffs of air that blow the borys aside. In other words, there’s no reason to worry about sharing this feel-good show with preschoolers.
In the colorful land of Toobalooba, seven friendly heroes called borys use their super senses to outsmart the silly villains who like to stir up trouble. When duty calls, the borys -- led by the energetic Noonbory -- leap into action, activating their super senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound, plus common sense and nonsense) and teaming up to unravel the baddies’ plans.
The concept of villains (especially those specifically named as such in the content) is relatively foreign to preschool series, and NOONBORY AND THE SUPER 7 does a bold thing by incorporating a group of bad guys into the stories. Fortunately the result is a well-rounded package that reminds kids that conflict doesn’t always come from within their inner circle. It’s a gentle introduction to the idea of good vs. bad and the existence of villains, which are a mainstay in cartoons geared toward slightly older kids.
Along with its obvious lessons in friendship and teamwork, this sweet series celebrates unique talents and shows kids that strength comes in the combination -- rather than the competition -- of those traits. The borys’ rallying cry says it all: "Atl together, we are better!" That they are, and preschoolers will be better for the messages they take away from this feel-good show.
Families can talk to their preschoolers about teamwork. How do the borys demonstrate good teamwork? Is each member an equal part of the team? What teams have you been part of? What were your team’s goals?
Kids: What are some of your special talents? How do you use those talents? What talents do you admire in other people?
Kids: What other shows do you know of that have "bad guys?" Do these characters ever frighten you? How do the other characters solve the problems that the villains cause? How do you solve problems with your own siblings and friends?
