What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series offers interesting historical details about America, but packages these stories in some coarse humor and stereotypes thanks to its comedic host. The show contains lots of bathroom humor, as well as some references to infidelity and other sexual innuendo, some salty language (“ass,” “hell”), and drinking. This being said, it also sends a very strong and positive message about the United States and its distinctive history and culture.

  • The delivery may be crude, but it offers a positive look at unique and distinctive stories that are part of American history. Some of the activities featured here (like making moonshine) are considered part of American tradition, but aren’t always legal. Subtle homophobic comments are sometimes made.
  • He may be course at times, but overall has a healthy respect for the history and culture he presents. Larry's character is based on stereotypes about Americans from the South.
  • Activities include off-road racing and other potentially dangerous stunts, but these events are offered within the context of their relationship to American history.
  • Larry’s jokes occasionally contain quick references to infidelity and other sexual innuendo. Occasionally Larry’s pants fall down and reveal his underwear, but no nudity is visible.
  • Words like “ass” and “hell” are occasionally audible. Some of the humor is coarse, and includes words like “butt crack”.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some references to drinking. One episode tracks the history of moonshine.

What's the story?

ONLY IN AMERICA WITH LARRY THE CABLE GUY is a reality series that reveals some interesting (and sometimes unusual) details from America’s history. Comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney, a.k.a. Larry The Cable Guy, travels America’s back roads in order to find the people, places, and things that define and/or represent the country’s unique small town history and culture. From learning about the history of etiquette from Emily Post’s great grandchildren in Vermont to understanding the historical relationship between moonshine and Nascar in Georgia, the down home host uncovers details about America that may be out of the ordinary, but that make this country great.

Is it any good?

The series shares historical details that are unique to America’s small town culture, but does so with the help of the host’s trademark hillbilly gags and bathroom humor.  As a result, the show feels more about the comedian than about the country’s distinctive history.

In its own way, the series celebrates the uniqueness of America. There are some mildly funny moments, too. History buffs might be disappointed in the way these stories are being presented here, but folks who like this sort of humor will find it entertaining.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about American history. Do you know of any stories or customs that form part of the country’s history? If someone were to tell these stories on television, how would you want them to be told?

  • What are cultural stereotypes? Where do they come from? Do you think some of these portrayals featured here are stereotypical? Why or why not? Do you think the stories here would be told differently if it were the actual Daniel Lawrence Whitney, instead of Larry The Cable Guy, telling them?

Test of how much your kids really know
I watched this with my 11-year-old son, he laughed at some of the crude jokes and tried very hard not to laugh at one he knew I'd be surprised he knew the meaning of, but it sorta just came out of him. We had a talk later and decided to only watch this show together --- and only on occasion, because it's nothing really great.

Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy NOT GOOD FOR KIDS
This show is definitely NOT for kids, adults only. My hubby watches it once in a blue moon, and the other night Larry said: 'It's been hot in this area today - I saw a girl running around in a tank top and the temperature wasn't the only thing rising around here'...ewwwwwwwwww! gross! Not to mention all the other 'wonderful' stuff he says - here's another gem: 'I'm going to Somalia to make a video called Girls Gone Hungry' ...Only In America HAS NOTHING to do with American History - if you want to teach your kids about history, DO NOT use this show.

Don't be a communist, watch this show and have a laugh.
This show, which I work on, is a great positive show about America. The jokes may be low-brow at times but there's nothing here that should offend any free thinking individual who can separate comedy from reality. Also, someone should tell Melissa Camacho to do some research as Dan Whitney's middle name isn't really lawrence - she simply just wrote what she read some where. Good journalistic integrity on that one. This show is great and should be watched by all people who want to appreciate what's great about America with a chuckle instead of a snooze. With that said, watch the show with your children. If you feel the need to explain something - do it. If you feel that it's not for your family that's your right and back that choice 100%. However, this show is chock full of History - as long as you aren't jotting down jokes like 'bootybumper'. Kisses and enjoy.
