What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about jokes. What makes a joke funny? What kinds of jokes are appropriate? How does the Pink Panther joke around, and when is he the subject of a bad joke? How is the cartoon series related to the live-action Pink Panther movies -- both the original and the remake? Which is funnier -- the movies, or the cartoon? Why?

What's the story?

What's the story?

THE PINK PANTHER cartoon series, a very loose adaptation of the 1963 movie starring Peter Sellers, follows the action adventures of a furry, pink panther with the manners of an English aristocrat as he calmly faces off against his nemesis, a dogged inspector (inspired by Sellers' character, Clouseau). Currently available on DVD and airing on TV in reruns, this show has it all: sophistication, humor, action, and a cool Henry Mancini theme song.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Unlike other shows from this era -- such as Tom & Jerry and The Perils of Penelope Pistop -- The Pink Panther is clever and funny without resorting to violence, questionable language, or sexual innuendo. Fans of almost any age will find the cool cat endearing whether he's starting trouble, running away from trouble, or saving the day. Even though the show is packed with humor and engaging plots, nothing is over the top (except maybe the music). Parents can relax because all of the jokes are cut and dried -- hidden innuendos, violence, and iffy language are nowhere to be found. The panther is a sweet, intelligent, lovable character, and his show is a clean, kid-friendly classic.

A few things to watch out for: Tobacco use is the show's greatest pitfall, with the panther himself smoking a cigarette during the opening credits. Supporting characters also smoke cigars from time to time. Plus, since the show doesn't have any dialogue, kids who can't read or don't understand the concept of money may not completely understand the jokes. This series relies on action, facial expressions, and the reading of signs to tell a story.

well, the pink panther cartoons are the best to watch, but in the beginning, all you can see is pink panther smoking tobacco before starting a cartoon, and plenty of tobacco drinking is not seen, but seen once, lots of slapstick cartoonish violence are seen (such as pratfalls, chasing, and funny mischief as it gets)... the language they say is "stupid", "idiot", "dumb", and "shut up" cause of the humans say it and the narrator also, pretty cool show that your kids have got to see!

Pink panther cartoons are the best!!
In every episode of the pink panther, the beginning always show pink panther smoking tobacco, and also it shows pratfalls, and several slapstick violence somewhat. But children of all ages should watch this like every single day for short.

Great for kids if you watch with them
My 4yr old absolutely loves Pink Panther and finds him hysterical. Granted, yes, it does have pipe and cigarette smoking, but you'll find those in real life. Also, having an exploding cigar is a bit of a deterrent from smoking. If you're sensitive to guns, I think there's some guns in there but if you're a responsible parent watching this with your kids, you can explain everything in there.

There is some cartoon violence that results in brief scratches, ripped or scorched clothes and more, but injuries last for 1-2 scenes. There is some smoking, but back then smoking really was not thought of as bad, until now.

Can't recommend it for very little kids.
The Inspector still has cigars blowing up in his face. Ixnay on the cigars.

Warning about DVD collection
Our 6- and 8-year-olds loved these cartoons, and it was a kick for me to see episodes I hadn't seen since childhood. However, please be aware that in addition to the smoking mentioned in the main review, the complete collection on DVD contains episodes that deal comically and blatantly with alcoholism and drunkeness. Went over my kids' heads at the time, but I was waiting for some awkward questions.
