What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this reality series showcases real-life police work, which is often raw, very dangerous, and filled with angry people, some of whom are the police officers themselves (although the women featured in the show don't engage in any inappropriate behavior). Expect some bleeped language, tense/violent scenes, and rough talk. The show is a good pick for parents to watch with kids who want to be cops when they grow up -- and it could also serve as a cautionary tale for those inclined toward trouble.

  • The show highlights cops fighting the good fight -- even if the fight is rather raw. All of the officers talk about how they want to help people and serve them by taking "bad guys" off the street.
  • The women swear, and they can get rough when they're taking criminals down. But they're also devoted wives and mothers intent on taking care of their families and doing the right thing. As women operating in a traditionally male world, they talk about how they bring their gifts as women to the job.
  • This is the real world of police work. Expect to see the bloody aftermath of violence (for example, a man who has been beaten up). Officers draw their guns in dangerous situations (such as entering a crack house), and they do get physical when taking down suspects.
  • While there's no actual sexual activity, a police officer does pose as a prostitute in a sting operation, and there's some sex talk (although no graphic descriptions).
  • Lots of bleeped language (and sometimes you can tell what's beeing bleeped out). Other words include "boobs" and "whore," as well as body-part terms like "vagina" (used in a clinical description).
  • Not applicable.
  • Two of the officers are on drug deterrence duty and have interactions with many drug addicts and dealers. Others encounter suspects who are drinking heavily. Some social drinking.

What's the story?

In POLICE WOMEN OF BROWARD COUNTY, TLC's cameras are on board for the ultimate ride-along. Crews tag along with the female officers of Florida's Broward County Sheriff's Department as they settle disputes, take down drug dealers, and serve as decoys for prostitution stings -- in between taking calls from their kids.

Is it any good?

Whether you like the show or not will depend on how much you like reality cop shows. The storytelling is good, if not overwhelmingly exciting. And the voices of the women are distinct -- it's hard not to get caught up in their stories and feel a lot of sympathy for them.

Still, while one episode might be interesting as a glimpse into this most difficult of jobs, it's hard to imagine watching week after week of drug dealers cursing officers out and perps getting busted. After all, a lot of crimes are surprisingly petty, and after awhile it can feel the same old, same old.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how true to life most reality TV actually is. Do you think this one is more or less accurate than other reality shows? Why?

  • Do shows like this help or hurt the world of law enforcement? Do you think they make kids more or less likely to get into trouble?

  • If this is an accurate depiction of real-life police work, do you think it could it inspire interest in the profession?

dhonna in jerzee luvzit ... it is obvious that ' children ' are not the target audience ... however , it can give mature women a realistic view of the job description and if it is something that an individual may want to pursue ... thumbs up here
