Police Women of Maricopa County (TLC)

common sense media says

Real women, real cops, real raw -- in Arizona this time.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this reality series shows real women doing police work, which means they encounter criminals, drug dealing, domestic disputes, and people on the edges of society. The language is raw, and includes words like "ass" and "piss," though the occasional  "f--k" is bleeped. Arrestees are occasionally partially (or completely) undressed, though all sensitive parts (and often faces) are blurred. Expect some tense/violent scenes and rough talk (sometimes by the police women themselves).

Positive messages: There is a strong law enforcement message: crime is bad, cops are good. Lots of the crime the officers encounter involves drugs and illegal immigration.
Positive role models: The women say repeatedly that by doing their jobs they want to help make their world better
for their kids and for the rest of the community. However, they do tend
toward a tough attitude -- one that is appropriate for their
work, but nonetheless, it might be off-putting to some. That said, the women are doing their jobs and using their gifts in a pretty mean, nasty world.
Violence: There are lots of guns drawn, occasional shootings, and plenty of physical struggles during arrests. Calls sometimes involve domestic violence.
Sex: Occasional references or encounters with prostitution.
Language: "Ass" and "piss" is heard fairly regularly. Stronger language is bleeped, although you can often figure what is being said.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Scenes of drug busts going down, discussion of drug dealing, etc.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how real the show is.  Parents can ask their kids if the documentary style of the show makes it more believable or less?
  • Does the show encourage women, in particular, to become police officers? How does the show address issues of gender, especially in the workplace?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Like its sister show, Police Women of Broward County, this reality offering follows four female deputies of the Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff's Department as they do their jobs: picking up drug dealers, dealing with domestic violence calls, chasing down bad guys, and arresting deadbeat dads. The work is dangerous and challenging and shows women -- who can be rough around the edges themselves -- dealing with people in crisis in tough, effective ways.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

This is one of those shows that sits on the better side of that vast gray area of not great, not bad. The featured deputies are largely personable and dedicated women who have kids and care about the world. Their stories have enough depth to them to hold viewers' interest.

But at the same time, you're not going to be calling your friends and insisting they watch this show. It's just not original enough, or variable enough to stand out.

Where are you? I'll find you....
It shows that a woman is capable of doing whatever she wants to do and still raise her children and be happy.

A little iffy....
I think this show is very good, and the police women are really good role models. It is a little iffy for me to watch, just because most of the things that they arrest people for are drugs. Also, it is even more iffy sometimes when the arrest has something to do with prostitution. Overall, I think this show would be good for ages 14+.
