What parents need to know

Parents need to know that in addition to highlighting the mental and physical challenges associated with extreme sports (as well as what inspires athletes to participate in them), this stunt-heavy series frequently shows athletes falling and getting hurt (bruises, scrapes, broken bones). Remind kids that the activities featured here can result in serious -- even potentially fatal -- injuries.

  • Although the series includes warnings about the dangerous nature of the sports and stunts it features, kids may still be very interested in trying them at home -- so be sure to remind them that feats like these aren't safe without supervision, training, and safety gear. On the upside, the athletes demonstrate a love, passion, and respect for their sports.
  • The athlethes are passionate about their sports, work hard, and look to challenge themselves constantly. On the downside, although women definitely participate in extreme sporting events, almost all of the athletes featured here are young men.
  • The sports are dangerous and can result in very serious injuries. Athletes are occasionally shown taking serious tumbles, which often result in sprains and broken bones.
  • Not applicable.
  • Fairly infrequent use of relatively mild words like "hell."
  • Sporting gear brands, like Billabong, are visible. Occasionally the labels of the athletes’ sponsors (like Siemens) are also visible.

What's the story?

RE:EVOLUTION OF SPORTS showcases some of the world’s most adventurous extreme sports -- and the athletes who are reinventing them to satisfy their craving for adventure. From freestyle motocross on natural hills to a two-week Alpine paragliding marathon, the show underscores the grueling mental and physical challenges of each event. It also introduces viewers to some of today’s most talented extreme competitors from around the world, including X-Alps creator Hannes Arch and pro-surfer Ian Walsh. In each episode, the athletes share their feelings about their extreme activities, including what inspires them about their sport, how they've evolved as athletes, and the different ways in which they're transforming their game.

Is it any good?

Re:Evolution of Sports does a nice job of highlighting the way that today’s extreme athletes push themselves and adventure sports to levels that continue to test their courage as well as their athletic abilities. It also effectively showcases the skill, mental toughness, and grace required to be an extreme athlete.

It’s worth noting that while the series explores a wide range of sports and a generally diverse group of athletes, women (who certainly participate in extreme sports) are mostly absent. And despite the fact that some athletes are shown crashing and/or getting hurt, there's not much discussion about the risks that these athletes take when they participate in these activities. Still, overall the show offers an interesting look at the evolving world of extreme sports and the athletes who love them.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what inspires people to participate in extreme sports. Do you think they enjoy risking injury? Are these athletes courageous, or just acting wild?

  • Do women participate in extreme sports? Which ones? Do you think more men than women participate in them? Why or why not?

  • Why do you think extreme sports aren’t regularly covered by the mainstream media as much as sports like basketball or golf?
