  • Common Sense says

Web site-inspired relationship series is silly and sexist.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The men are chauvinistic and egotistical; their girlfriends sometimes excuse or celebrate this behavior (and at other times criticize it). Some of the women exhibit serious self-esteem issues. The featured men and women are from various racial/ethnic backgrounds.
  • Violence:

Arguments often break out between the couples. Although most of the guys are too concerned with their looks to fight, some box or spar at the gym with their shirts off -- but it's more about showing off their physique than their athletic abilities.
  • Sex:

Some strong sexual innuendo, including the men’s claims that they're good in bed. All of them consider themselves sexy; some claim to have had multiple sexual partners; many openly admit to cheating. Women are shown in skimpy outfits and bathing suits. Both men and women are sometimes seen dancing provocatively. Women are referred to as “chicks," while the terms “douchebag” and “tool” are frequently used to describe the men.
  • Language:

Words like “damn," "hell,” and “ass” are audible. Stronger curse words, like “a--hole," “s--t,” and “f--k” are bleeped.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Frequent drinking (beer, hard liquor) at bars and parties; some of the men exhibit their “wild side” when they're drunk. Some visible smoking.

What Parents Need to Know

About Is She Really Going Out with Him?

Parents need to know that this series about sexist, self-absorbed men and the women who date them is based on the popular-but-crude Web site "Hot Chicks with Douchebags." It's played for humor, but that doesn't make it any less problematic. Expect lots of sexist references and some strong innuendo, including comments about women's body parts and conversations about sexual behavior. There's also plenty of strong language (though the worst is bleeped) and drinking, as well as some smoking.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about sexism and the media. Do you think the media perpetuates sexist thinking/behavior, or does it simply reflect existing social values?  Families can also discuss dating and self-esteem. Should you ever date someone who disrespects you? What kinds of behavior should women (or men) never tolerate from their partners?
