What parents need to know

Parents need to know that even though the women competing in this modeling-themed reality show are repeatedly told that women can be beautiful at any age and that they have to be more than beautiful to win (i.e. have a personality, too), it's clear that looks are important. All of the featured women are slender, and those who look younger than their age are praised for it. The assessments of the aspiring contestants are occasionally on the brutal side. Expect some bleeped-out language as well as audible words like "ass." There's also some innuendo and emphasis on "sexiness."

  • The idea that women can be beautiful at any age is very positive, although most of the featured women conform to standard notions of beauty, and the show places a strong emphasis on looks. Women who look younger than they are seem to get extra praise. Assessments of asipring contestants are sometimes harsh.
  • Not applicable.
  • The contestants are often told to look sexy, and there's some innuendo (a woman showed how she'd like to do a photo shoot with a lion by wrapping herself around one of the judges, etc.). Some modeling tasks involve wearing things like sheer fabric drapes.

What's the story?

SHE'S GOT THE LOOK is another reality competition show in which easy-on-the-eyes contestants live in the same house as they try to beat each other out for the big prize -- in this case, a contract with a top modeling agency and a magazine photo spread. The twist? These women are all over the age of 35. From the large casting calls, the contestant pool is cut to 20 for the semi-final competition -- and then to the final 10. This is the group that lives together, competing in various elimination challenges each week and hoping to be the last one standing.

Is it any good?

As competition shows go, She's Got the Look is pretty standard. There's the aspirational side of it -- several of the women put aside their dreams years ago to raise their kids and consider this a second chance at their dream career -- as well as the drama of the competition and the emotional personal stories.

Interestingly, the women's age doesn't seem to be that much of an issue -- which is a little odd, since that's the show's big angle. But frankly, it's great that no one seems shocked or surprised that a woman of 63 could still be beautiful," as indeed she is. In fact, one contestant is actually criticized for looking too perfect. Whether or not the series ends up being worth a second look for parents and teens, that's a message you don't see very often in reality TV.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about how the media shapes our ideas of what is considered beautiful, especially when it comes to older women. One of the women is considered particularly beautiful because she looks 20 years younger than she actually is. Does that make sense? What makes someone beautiful? Do you think the definition of beauty is -- or should be -- limited to what we see on television or in the movies?

Good for older kids and tweens.
I love this show! It is my guilty pleasure. There are several good messages about your looks at any age. They are good role models because they work hard and never give up. But... there is alot of noticable product placement. And It's rare but they do use bad language at time when upset or mad. Then the revealing outfits its the only thing thats in the sexual catergory.

Nope, Won't do it
This show is a tad bit iffy like a judge telling a female character to walk in her underwear.

Doesn't look very appropriate from what I can tell
Saw one of the commercial's, and showed a girl stripping off her shirt, of course covering it. Also, reference to "getting naked".
