What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the main characters are three intelligent, well-adjusted junior high girls who are comfortable with themselves. Ginger's mom, Lois, provides an admirable role model as a single parent who balances work and family life and is a strong force in her kids' development. The two coolest girls in school poke some fun at Ginger and her friends, but it only serves to reinforce their strong self-esteem, which is a consistent theme of the show.

  • Ginger's mom is a single parent who works hard but always puts her kids first. The school's demographics are fairly well rounded, and although snobby Miranda is African-American, there's no racism whatsoever.
  • Not applicable.
  • Boy/girl relationships are mentioned, but nothing physical is shown.

What's the story?

On the "coolness" scale, 12-year-old Ginger Foutley (voiced by Melissa Disney) and her best friends Dodie Bishop (Aspen Miller) and Macie Lightfoot (Jackie Harris) teeter toward the nerdy end, making them the victims of some nasty teasing at school. But their constant desire to climb the popularity ladder is offset by their realization that self-acceptance and unconditional friendship matter more than the opinions of their peers. Produced by the creators of the Rugrats media franchise, AS TOLD BY GINGER is a multidimensional look at the life of a preteen girl pulled between being true to herself and succumbing to the demands of popularity.

Is it any good?

The three main characters are intelligent, well-adjusted junior high girls who are comfortable with themselves. Ginger is helped along the way by her caring single mom, Lois (Laraine Newman), representing the foundation for Ginger's strong values. Viewers are privy to Ginger's insights through her chats with Dodie and Macie, as well as through the poetry she writes, such as "Someone once told me the grass is much greener on the other side... From where I'm standing, my grass is green." Lessons like that are worth learning, and they're exactly the kind of messages viewers will get from this show -- which makes it a winner for kids ages 7 and up.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the pressure to be part of the "in" crowd. How important is it to be accepted among the so-called "cool kids"? What if being cool meant doing or saying things at others' expense? Which group of kids on this show would you rather be friends with? Why? Parents also can talk about Ginger's relationship with Lois. What do you admire about Ginger's mom? What's important in the relationship between parent and child?

Junior high girls are models of REAL teen drama, definetly much better than Degrassi and Gigantic
This is simply a splendid show. It realistically deals with a girl as she goes through her middle school life. She is an extremely good role model as her personality is practically universal to people of both sexes (which is why I strongly disagree with anyone who is off base enough to think this show is girly) and she is more mature than most college students. The plot lines are extremely interesting, and there is a certain amount of humor as well. If the TeenNick channel is obsessed with drama, then they should start airing this, and get rid of that boring Gigantic and stop over-playing the rarely interesting Degrassi. As far as content is concerned, there is nothing that could possibly be seen as inappropriate for certain kids at all. Still, this is a show that in reality can pick up an audience of people between the ages of 12 and 18, rather than Nick's traditional audience of 6-12. Then again, the Carl sub-plots, which I consider the show's main weakness, if not its only weakness, are simple and comical enough to attract some younger kids.

This was a great show. It taught kids morals and was fun to watch. It was one of my favorites growing up. It's such a shame that it's gone and now we have iCarly and all this other junk Nickelodian poops out.

An Imaginitive show!
I loved it when I was a kid, I really like it still. Good animation! It's all about friendship, growing up and other morals. But now things are changing when we have the new horrible shows on nickelodeon. Like Fanboy and Chum Chum. I loved this show and yes I still watch it!
