Parents need to know that this quirky animated series earns its place in the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup with strong sexual innuendo (including references to oral sex, masturbation, and sadomasochism) and rude behavior. It's definitely not intended for kids, and the fact that much its humor is based on negative stereotypes might not appeal to adults, either. Expect some drinking, drug references, bleeped language, and limited use of guns.
Positive messages:Tom is a nice guy with good intentions who loves his wife and family (although he's sexually attracted to other women). The series presents some strong negative stereotypes about people living in small-town America; few are presented as intelligent or good looking.
Violence:Some minor pushing and shoving. Occasional animated gun violence, including the use of tranquilizer guns.
Sex:Strong sexual innuendo, including references to sexual intercourse, oral sex, masturbation, and sadomasochism. Homosexual references. Lewd behavior is sometimes visible, including a woman reaching for Tom's crotch, spanking, and simulated sucking. In one episode, The Mayor is involved in a sex scandal, and Tom is asked to cover it up.
Language:Language includes words like "damn" and "hell." Occasional use of stronger words is bleeped.
This isn't the best show on TV, but it's witty most of the time, and there are only a few TV-MA episodes. Some of them are TV-PG, and use little or no bad language except for using other words like "darn" and "shirt" in place of d--n and s--t. But with that said, violence would be used more instead of language.
I'm kind of confused here, because I only watched 2 episodes of the show, and they were TV-PG. Those episodes didn't have much sex, language, or anything that bad in them except for stealing and a kid who said "My uncle's porn smells like salmon." I guess I'll have to watch more.
I could understand why some people might not like this show. The humor can be sort of surreal and sometimes even dry or wry. But I enjoy it. I like the idea of parodying small towns, since I've lived in a small town for all of my 14 years (I know my profile says 17, that's wrong, I'm actually 14) and I'm sick of it. The humor in the show would go over most kids' heads. Most people watching this are probably over the age of 17.
