What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this fantasy/sci-fi adventure series is a generally worry-free choice for the grade schoolers it will appeal to. Very young kids might be frightened by the concept of monsters living among the general population, but tweens should be able to handle it. There’s some prominent weapon use during the kids' battles with the monsters, but the shiny, oversized ray guns are clearly fantastical props, and no one gets seriously hurt. Expect a little bit of mild flirting between two main characters as well.

  • Troop members research the creatures they track and must think creatively to find ways to capture them (it's all based in fantasy, of course... ).
  • The show emphasizes the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Teens from different social circles become friends when they’re brought together as part of the Troop.
  • Troop members put themselves in potential harm’s way (though they rarely ever get injured) to preserve public safety. Team members include two boys and one girl, all of whom are on equal footing when it comes to battling their foes.
  • Teens frequently use fantastical weapons like laser blasters and plasma guns to combat monsters, which wield special powers like turning people into stone. But true injuries are rare and only superficial.

What's the story?

High school is little more than a necessary evil for social underdog Jake (Nick Purcell), but his luck changes when an stealthy aptitude test earns him a spot on a secret team that battles supernatural beings. Suddenly going to school takes on new meaning for Jake, since the building itself doubles as a cover for the Troop’s lair -- and a holding pen for some of the uncivilized creatures that Jake's teammates Felix (David Del Rio) and Hayley (Gage Golightly) have captured. But battling basilisks is nothing compared to the challenge of keeping their secret and going about their not-so-normal teenage lives.

Is it any good?

If the show's plot description rings a few bells for you, it’s not without good reason. THE TROOP shares plenty of similarities with the 1997 hit movie Men in Black, right down to vomiting-monster scenes that will thrill the tween set. The concept isn’t exactly original, but the good news is that the likable cast and great special effects make up for any shortage of creativity.

Kids will enjoy the show’s mix of fantasy and adventure and have fun at Jake’s expense as they watch him balance his new life with the mundane nature of teen existence. And while it can’t be said that the show touts particularly obvious messages of any kind, parents can breathe easy knowing that there’s nothing in the way of content that will surprise their grade schoolers.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how the violence in this show compares to that in other TV shows and movies they've seen. Does it have less impact because it's based in fantasy?

  • Do you believe in extraterrestrial life or supernatural beings? What evidence exists to support believers’ claims? How reliable do you think it is?

  • Do you think this show gives an accurate impression of teen life? How does your experience with friends compare to Jake’s? Would you be able to keep a secret as big as his from your friends?

Cool new sci-fi show won't appeal to everyone
The same network that brought us "The Secret World of Alex Mack" in the 1990s has once again teamed up with Thomas Lynch to bring us "The Troop"--Nickelodeon's first sci-fi procedural series. Every episode starts out with a cold open that ends with a mystery right before the opening credits roll (like in "House"). The three members of The Troop--Jake, Felix, and Haley--then figure out the cause of the mystery inside and outside of school. It's not particularly violent, but it might be too scary for kids under 7. In general, it's a very interesting and unique series that will get kids thinking, but this isn't a show that will have a massive appeal like "iCarly" or "Spongebob". At most, "The Troop" will become a niche hit like "The Office" and "Fringe". Teens and adults who like mystery procedurals like "Fringe" and comedic procedurals like "Bones" and "Castle" might like "The Troop".

*giggles*
You know, this show is cool! I must admit, i didn't watch it when it came out, mostly because I don't usually watch any live action Nick show that's not made in Schneider's Bakery. I am surprised this show was canceled so soon. It had a great plot, too. The only episode I didn't like was the Christmas one... that was creepy...

This show has so much disgusting monsters and It just makes me wanna throw up whenever I watch this show! My brother watches it all the time but whenever I do not want to watch it, he attacks me because I always refuse to watch this show! I hope he does not see what I wrote here. This is way too violent for kids!
