Parents need to know that this edgy series follows Vice Magazine team members as they report on political, cultural, and other stories from around the world that may not be covered in the mainstream media. Stories vary by episode but may contain sexual content (like stripping); references to war, terrorism, and beheadings; and other controversial political and social issues. Curses like “f--k” are bleeped.
THE VICE GUIDE TO EVERYTHING follows Vice Magazine co-founder Shane Smith, intern-turned-correspondent Ryan Duffy, and online editor Thomas Morton as they cover unique stories about the modern world often using a particapatory-journalism approach. The series attempts to define and appeal to today’s contemporary youths by featuring interviews with interesting people, investigating unique subcultures and rituals, and highlighting trends in popular culture from around the world.
This edgy series, which is based on the popular Canadian alternative magazine, features the kind of offbeat reports and information that the youth culture publication is known for. The magazine initially focused on sex, drugs, and music, but as the show's intro describes, the publishers eventually widened their lens to include politics, art, environment, and other cultural stories -- and this is the approach the show takes. The series often explores political and cultural topics in a way that questions some of the information that the public receives from mainstream media.
The show’s choice of topics definitely makes it interesting. But it also covers plenty of subjects that deal with very mature subject matter -- for example, Mexican drug dealers who make movies glorifying their lifestyle. Although most of these subjects are offered in a specific context, it's best reserved for older teens.
Families can talk about mainstream versus alternative media. What is alternative media? What purpose does it serve in society?
Does alternative media ever become mainstream? What are some of the more popular alternative media outlets today?
