What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this singing competition places more importance on vocal talent than image, unlike the popular American Idol. The show's overall messages are positive and encouraging, but there is the occasional bleeped language (with mouths blurred) and some flirtatious references.

  • The competition prioritizes vocal talent over image.
  • The celebrity coaches offer honest, constructive criticism to contestants in a way that's positive and encouraging.
  • Friendly competition between the coaches sometimes leads to humorous threats to "bring each other down."
  • Occasional mild sexual references, including a humorous request for a contestant to "take his pants off."

What's the story?

In THE VOICE -- a reality singing competition based on the Dutch series The Voice of Holland -- celebrity singers select and coach talented vocalists in hopes of helping one of them reach musical stardom. Hosted by Carson Daly, the show follows pop singer Christina Aguilera, country singer Blake Shelton, hip-hop artist Cee-Lo Green, and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine as they blindly choose eight contestants each to mentor based on their vocal abilities alone. If more than one coach wants a particular competitor, the contestant gets to choose who s/he wants to be mentored by. Each coach works with their team of contestants to develop their singing and offers them tips and advice intended to help them build their careers. They also pit team members against each other in singing competitions to determine who will advance to live stage shows, where audience members will vote on who they want to advance the finale. The singer who impresses the most during the big live performance wins a recording contract and $100,000.

Is it any good?

This series matches the musical competitiveness of American Idol but attempts to do so by underscoring the importance of vocal ability rather than looks and image. Part of this is accomplished by showcasing legitimately talented singers who successfully make it to the final on-camera auditions, rather than highlighting lackluster and/or musically challenged hopefuls for a laugh.

Much is made about the coaches' talent and celebrity status, but their primary function is to mentor the new artists rather than amuse viewers by insulting contestants and/or creating tabloid-worthy drama. Their ability and desire to constructively critique contestants in a way that's both honest and encouraging also creates a lot of positive energy. Overall, it's a formula that successfully creates an entertaining viewing experience that feels genuine.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what it takes to be successful singer in the music industry. Is having a great voice enough to make it big? How much attention should be paid to a singer's image?

  • How can critiques be helpful to those who want a career in the
music industry? What's the difference between constructive and
    destructive criticism?

Inspiring, and by far, one of the best talent shows I ever saw!
This show even teaches you that looks don't matter when the judges aren't allowed to see contestants during the audition. Profanity is, however, a major issue with the show. So far Adam from Maroon 5 said the A-word, and Ceelo Green "bleeped." There was mild sexual things as well. Christina Agulara asked a male contestant to "take their pants off." There was also a really surprising shot of two lesbian women kissing. Other than that The Voice is a spectacular show that more people should watch.

It's a great show, but a lot of the times the judges make sexual comments and some cussing.

Must Watch!
I'm actually liking this show better than American Idol! Its exciting whenever anyone gets on that stage because youll never know when they're going to press the button or if they even do. There are minor things like bleeped words and some mild sexual humor. But other than that its a wonderful show. This is something that you can watch with the whole family.

I love this show!
I think the show is very entertaining. It has some pretty good singers, and who doesn't love the suspense of wondering who will win?

perfect For Family
i think that the show is good. I think over all the show is great. I think that the blind adiations really speak for themselves. I think that it shows kids that it doesn't matter what you look like it matters your talent. I think that it really good. Although i think that some of the language is bad. Like last nigth i thought that Adam saying peanus was very uneeded. Well over all though i think that they are teaching kids that it is just raw talent not your looks.

I was really excited to see this show. I thought it looked so much better than other singing competitions. And it was. The blind auditions make it so much more interesting and the message of looka don't matter is great. There is a little bit of language (mainly from Adam and Cee Lo) but overall it's a great family show.

cute show not based on appearance
this is a truly wonderful show where the judges base their votes on the constants voice (hence the name) and not their looks (as american idol did) to pick out who they want on their team. now they're going to have to train their team
