What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series introduces preschoolers to a variety of zoo animals through the eyes of two curious aliens. Kids will enjoy the cute characters and their gadget-filled spaceship, and the show encourages young viewers to be inquisitive about the world around them. Parents may be disappointed in the aliens’ lack of decipherable language, but an off-screen narrator’s translation ensures that kids don’t miss the meaning of the show.

  • Viewers learn about a variety of zoo inhabitants.
  • The series encourages preschoolers to investigate the world around them and identify its inhabitants.
  • SpottyWot and DottyWot are resourceful, curious about their surroundings, and excited to learn about the new animals they encounter.
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

THE WOTWOTS is a preschool series from New Zealand that centers on two aliens -- DottyWot (voiced by Nathalie Boltt) and SpottyWot (Martin Baynton) -- who arrive on Earth in a steam-powered spaceship and explore the zoo where they’ve landed. The WotWots peer through a periscope called the “Sneak-a-Peek” into the world around them and use clues to identify the animals they see.

Is it any good?

This series is narrated by creator Martin Baynton, who interacts with the WotWots from off screen and translates their toddler-like babbling for the audience. The show pairs their computer-animated puppets with live-action scenes of animals and zoo settings, making the content more realistic and relatable for its young viewers.

Preschoolers will learn about a variety of zoo animals, but the show’s better selling point is its focus on rewarding kids’ curiosity about the world around them. The characters’ language shortcomings might be distracting for older viewers and certainly don’t help kids’ vocabulary development, but otherwise the bright, friendly characters are fun for preschoolers.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about animals. Kids: What's your favorite animal? How do animals provide us with companionship or services? What's involved in caring for animals?

  • Kids: Did you like the characters in this preschool show? How do they compare to some of your other favorites? Did you find their language distracting? What gestures or other clues did they give to help you understand what they were saying?

  • What are some places you’d like to explore? How would you get there? What tools would you need? How would you identify the places and things around you?

The WotWots are cute, fuzzy, characters for your preschooler.
I was flipping through the channels one morning and saw a show called "The WotWots". At first, I thought it would be a Teletubby or Boohbah-style show with cheesy "costume" characters but it wasn't! It is cute, positive, kid's show about two little aliens named Spottywot and Dottywot. They kind of remind me of a mix between Twiddlebugs and YipYips from "Sesame Street". They live in a little space-ship just like the H00bs. It is very positive and their is no language, violence, sex, drugs, or "rude" humor. It is meant for ages toddler to preschool.

Language Issue Too Much
I can't get past the language they use. I have a real issue with shows that use "made up languages". I don't want my kids imitating how they speak - I don't let them watch it. Maybe for a 1 year old who can't talk or a 10 year old who can :)
