Twilight: Talking to Your Kids About the Book and Movie

By Common Sense Media
November 17, 2008

Great conversations to have with your kids.

Great conversations to have with your kids.

1. Role models: Edward is portrayed as the perfect boyfriend -- totally devoted, utterly protective, completely loving. But there’s also a bit of obsession and even some controlling behavior. What qualities does he have that appeal to your kids?

2. Role models, part two: Bella is smart, independent, and relatively self-assured. But she also always seems to need rescuing. What do your kids think about that? Do they think that her accident-prone nature is part of what appeals to Edward? Does he get to play the savior?

3. Reality check: What makes the relationship between Bella and Edward so exciting? Do your kids think they can find a relationship like that (vampirism aside...)?

4. Sexual abstinence: Edward and Bella draw the line at kissing. How realistic do your kids think that is for 17-year-olds?

5. What makes a good read: What is it about these books that makes them so popular? The romance? The constant danger? The Romeo-and-Juliet-ness of Bella and Edward’s relationship? Supernatural elements? Very handsome characters?

6. Books into film: What changes did the movie make, and why? Did you agree with them?

7. "I only play a vampire in the movies." A pre-release promotional tour by Robert Pattison (who plays Edward) has set off a frenzy. One girl in San Francisco actually asked the star to "bite her." Why do your kids think people confuse actors with the characters they play?

What messages do you think kids get from Twilight?

I love these books but I hope teens don't overrate them. Some have even gone as far as replacing the bible with this book
I mean they're good, but are they that good that we replace our spiritual life with these romantic novels?

I agree. I enjoyed the books and the movie but do think it is getting out of hand. Here are my issues with Twilight and Smeyer:
- Being perfect is not a flaw, so get a life Smeyer
- Smeyer is only reflecting off her personal fantasy
- Edward is obsessive and abusive
- Edward is a super-human moron
- Real vampires don't sparkle!
- Edward isn't that strong nor fast
- Bella needs to have other friends and stop being so clingy
- Bella is an anti-feminist and a bad role model.
- The Volturi are not menancing

Edward is interested in Bella. Bella is interested in Edward. Edward loves Play Fun Games Bella. Edward tells Bella to back off from him. And repetition goes on.

I think young girls will find about what real relationships are like soon enough. Let them dream while they still have the sentimentality.

the book series was quite adrenaline-filled. it really captivates the imagination from many aspects. From the idea of fictional creatures living in your backyard to the thought of them being more human than myth-twilight has caused an uproar in society in the teen world and in the adult world. the book gets rather explicit in the third and fourth novel, but otherwise is a great read for kids dying to "sink their teeth" into a good book.

I very much enjoyed the books. I also enjoyed the movie. I have 3 daughters. It did concern me very much that the main character, Bella, was willing to give up everything, her innocence, her faith, and even her life, for a boy (or so she thought). I understand love and I understand teenage emotions, but I don't think a young girl reading the story, forming her impressions, thoughts, and ideals about dating and men, would be positively influenced by Bella's choices. Because in truth, regular boys are not immortal and not ever worth giving up your innocence, your faith, or certainly your life. No person, boy, man, girl or woman is worth that, and I want to caution parents to be aware that these books could desensitize our daughters. In truth, our self respect and values are still a huge deal. Hold tight to them!

i absolutely love twilight. lots of people think that twilight is one of those really fake stories about "stupid vampires". thats what i thought at first. my friends just told me to read it so i bought the book and started reading it. and i actually couldn't stop turning the pages. people just think it sux cuz they think that it's bad so when they start reading it....they dont really see how good it is. but thats not for everyone cuz some people truly didn't like it. what im trying to say is try to read with an open mind and by the way TWILIGHT FRIKEN ROX!!! EDWARD'S SO HOT!!! :)

You might want to put the Twilight series down for a little bit and pick up the actual Bible and give it as much attention as you have this series. Just a thought......nothing against the book or the author.... but putting either in the same category as G*d and the Bible is kinda disturbing.

the book and the movie r the best. i think edward is so hot. the end of the book where it talks about the letter she wrote for edward was so sad. i am on the third book it is real good. i hate reading books but now i dont.i fi was going to rate it i would give it a 5 from 1-5.i will watch all of the twilight movies when they come out in theater and i am buying all of the movie.peace talk to u guys later.

Meyers has the ability to make some of her characters likeable; I loved both Jasper's and Alice's personality.
But the book itself is just a bit boring. In the first four hundred pages of size-twelve times new roman context, what happens? Edward is interested in Bella. Bella is interested in Edward. Edward loves Bella. Edward tells Bella to back off from him. And repetition goes on.
But the last hundred pages were brilliant, in my opinion.

Note that Edward isn't ~really~ 17 years old. According to the story, he was turned into a vampire in 1918, when he was dying of influenza. Thus, it may be more realistic that he would have the wisdom or experience required for sexual abstinence than the average 17-year-old. Just a thought.

the movie was really good!! and yeah i dont know if ANY guy is like edward :[ i wish...i mean all guys have their flaws. and bella is just plain annoying.

i think ur crazy. ok that's to much. sorry. if ur going to judge or rate it, u need to read it. its not the same as any other of its kind. well... i absolutely love the book. Ive read them all at least twice. they are very good. i don`t know how Myer pulls so much emotion into her writing but she does. read it and write again.

Let me simply say, that from a literary perspective, TWILIGHT is absolutley horrible. The vocabulary is early-mid junior high school at best. Not only that, the plot is cliche and predictable. Who hasn't seen DOZENS of high-school vampire love stories on sites like Myspace, Facebook, and especially Quizilla? I pretty much knew the ending from before i even picked up the book, having read its bretheren so many times before.
Poorly written, uncreative subject matter and predictable plot give this book a 1/5

I was one of the first to read all 4 books and i have to say it's the best book ever. I must say stephenie meyer is my god and twilight's my bible =)
