Common Sense Review

You know the story. It's late on a Sunday night, your kid has math or science homework due the next day, the library is closed, and the problem in the textbook makes no sense to you -- to say nothing of making sense to your kid. HOTMATH.COM is the answer to your prayers.

It's a subscription service with two levels of membership. Unlimited access for a year is under $50. The site also offers a two-month subscription.

Hotmath provides much more than "just the answer" found in the back of a textbook. You'll find complete hints and solutions to the odd-numbered problems from more than 150 textbooks -- mostly math -- from middle school to college level.

The first step is to locate your subject, then click on the thumbnail picture of your textbook's cover. Locate the chapter and page number, and click on the problem. You can step through the hints until you see the entire solution. If you're still a little hazy, you can click to suggested review sections of the site and get a quick and colorful review of, say, the formula for finding the area of a trapezoid. College students will find their calculus texts similarly explained.

If you don't want to subscribe, there's still a lot offered for free on Hotmath. The easy-to-use review sections are available to everyone, as are the Flash movies about how to perform various functions on Texas Instruments graphing calculators. Also, at least some content for most of the textbook questions is free, and some textbooks offer all of their solutions for free.

It all adds up to student success. Another great homework help option is the software Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007.
