What parents need to know

Parents need to know that kids can use this site -- which features links to other sites -- to get homework help for all kinds of subjects. Started by a teacher and organized by specific curriculum covered in schools for different ages, the site of culled resources is broken down into sections and subsections and the links are listed in a grid format, which makes scanning them easy. According to the site, the links are checked weekly and any dead links are removed. There are some Google-sponsored ads.

Educational value: The site offers educational information on topics ranging from history to hearing.
Positive messages: Not applicable.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Google ad links are listed throughout the site, but you don't see what sites are being promoted until you click on the links.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: The site's health section includes information about why drugs, smoking, and drinking are bad.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about why using a site that has pre-screened links might be easier and safer than finding the information using a search engine. Could you stumble across incorrect or offensive material when using a search engine? How can you tell if something is a legitimate source of information?

Is it any good?

KidInfo.com calls itself "the Web's best homework and student, teacher/parent reference resource." It does link to a lot of information -- which it says is curriculum covered in schools -- and it's helpful that the links are organized by subject matter. But finding what you are looking for will still take some searching, and may not be on the site at all. Some sections, like Health, are lengthy and detailed. However, students looking for info for their art class report probably won't get much help from the site's six artist-specific links. In truth, KidInfo.com may not be the perfect homework helper, but it's a good place to find interesting information and a number of great, safe-for-kids resources to spark interest in school topics.
