What Parents Need to Know

This review of NewMoonGirls was written by Dana Cotter

Parents need to know that this site is a sister spin-off from the award-winning magazine New Moon Girls. It's aimed at girls 8-12 years old; content is written by girls and about girls'/women's issues and accomplishments. Girls can post questions, contribute to staff-moderated message boards, and read or publish stories, videos, art, and poems, all of which are screened before posting to the public. Girls decide whether they want to share their creative portfolios or keep them private. There's a New Moon store where posters, back issues of the magazine, and T-shirts are sold. Otherwise, this site is completely ad free. It's a subscription model, with a membership fee of $19.95 per year.

  • Families can talk about whether they might like to participate in discussions or post questions on this type of Web site. What kinds of questions might they feel more comfortable asking on the computer versus with a friend or adult? Will they actually check back to find out who has responded? What will they do if the response to their question is un-satisfactory in some way?

More on NewMoonGirls

What’s the Story?

NEWMOONGIRLS.COM is a stellar online destination for girls 8-12. The site is focused on establishing a safe online community and a place where girls can publish their creative works. Many areas of the site are available without joining. However, a $19.95 per year membership fee (or $44.95 for the online and bi-monthly magazine combo) allows girls to swap stories with other girls, post sensitive questions, and take part in moderated discussions. Membership also gives girls access to their own room -- a place to post their "stuff": likes and dislikes, art, videos, stories, or poems.

Is It Any Good?

Like the award-winning magazine (with seven Parent's Choice Foundation Gold Awards), Newmoongirls.com has its priorities right. All postings and chats are either prescreened or moderated by adults. Girls will find articles about influential women past and present, as well as positive stories posted by girls about their daily struggles. The "Beautiful Girls" section pays tribute to girls who have shown beauty from the inside out. At "Ask A Girl" or "Dear Luna," girls can post a question or just talk about what's important to them. This site provides rich opportunities for girls to mentor one another and learn more about themselves through self-expression.

A parent section and article library are on the way. As membership grows, more public-led content will make this site dynamo.

    The Absolutely Perfect Website!

I LIVE for this website! It's an amazing, safe, online community for girls. I feel so safe on New Moon, and I've made so many great friends. On the message boards I know that girls feel the same way about things that I do, and even if they don't, we're able to have a respectful debate about something. I can post videos, photos, stories, poetry, etc. in My Stuff, and girls can comment and tell me what they think. You can participate in chats with other girls and authors. There are games to play, and it's also educational! You can talk about famous women, and things that empower girls. You're encouraged to use your voice and have your place in the world. New Moon is the perfect place for ANY girl, and I'm so happy that I'm a member.

    Fun and Safe

I'm a new moon girl, and I'm on the editorial board! They have moderators, who are GEB parents, so PARENTS get to choose what goes on the site! Nothing inappropriate or rude gets through. It's fun, and great for girls to share work, and interact. 5 stars.

    Safe Online Empowerment for Girls!

:) Awesome! My only concerns are language (ex. Oh my God) and periods, young sex, etc, etc,. Other than that, it's a safe, fun world that allows you to express creativity and chat with people like you!

Great site for responsible pre-teen girls

Great website for pre-teen girls. Good, safe site for an introduction to on-line interaction with other girls. Kids can communicate with other children on-line, so parents should definitely monitor. But so far, we've found it to be a great resource.

Great for girls aged 8 years or more

In a world awash in consumerism and negative stereotypes for girls, New Moon Girls is an oasis. It gives age appropriate information on a whole range of issues as well as a range of positive role models for girls. And the best thing is that the kids actually like it!
