Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site is a sister spin-off from the award-winning magazine New Moon Girls. It's aimed at girls 8-12 years old; content is written by girls and about girls'/women's issues and accomplishments. Girls can post questions, contribute to staff-moderated message boards, and read or publish stories, videos, art, and poems, all of which are screened before posting to the public. Girls decide whether they want to share their creative portfolios or keep them private. There's a New Moon store where posters, back issues of the magazine, and T-shirts are sold. Otherwise, this site is completely ad free. It's a subscription model, with a membership fee of $19.95 per year.

Families can talk about whether they might like to participate in discussions or post questions on this type of Web site. What kinds of questions might they feel more comfortable asking on the computer versus with a friend or adult? Will they actually check back to find out who has responded? What will they do if the response to their question is un-satisfactory in some way?

What's the story?

NEWMOONGIRLS.COM is a stellar online destination for girls 8-12. The site is focused on establishing a safe online community and a place where girls can publish their creative works. Many areas of the site are available without joining. However, a $19.95 per year membership fee (or $44.95 for the online and bi-monthly magazine combo) allows girls to swap stories with other girls, post sensitive questions, and take part in moderated discussions. Membership also gives girls access to their own room -- a place to post their "stuff": likes and dislikes, art, videos, stories, or poems.

Is it any good?

Like the award-winning magazine (with seven Parent's Choice Foundation Gold Awards), Newmoongirls.com has its priorities right. All postings and chats are either prescreened or moderated by adults. Girls will find articles about influential women past and present, as well as positive stories posted by girls about their daily struggles. The "Beautiful Girls" section pays tribute to girls who have shown beauty from the inside out. At "Ask A Girl" or "Dear Luna," girls can post a question or just talk about what's important to them. This site provides rich opportunities for girls to mentor one another and learn more about themselves through self-expression.

A parent section and article library are on the way. As membership grows, more public-led content will make this site dynamo.
