Parents need to know that although the games are free, the games pages have four banner ads plus several Google Ads. There is also a download section called "Freeware," but some of it is really shareware offered for sale. There's also a link to political and first-person shooter games buried in the free online game selections.
Although framed by loads of advertising, this site offers hundreds of free games, coloring pages, puzzles, and clip art, all aimed at kids. The main attraction of the site is the huge library of online games. The coloring section offers virtual pages to paint via the computer as well as printables to color offline with real crayons. There are also printable activity pages featuring a maze, a crossword puzzle, and several word games. More of these appear in the "Learning Games" section: enough to keep you busy on a long car trip. In the same section are several fun Flash games to try. Looking for some clip art to illustrate a personal web page or a school report? There are more than 1,300 images at this site, arranged in categories. And simple Flash "toys" can be found in the "Toys and Movies" section.
The game selections actually on TheKidzPage site are ok, but the political "Kerry-Bush Bash" game includes a link to UltimateArcade.com. Once you have taken the link, it's too easy to get to first person shooter games on Ultimate Arcade, such as "Flash Strike," where the object is for you to aim your gun and shoot as many counter-terrorists as you can. If you stick with the other games located right at the Kidz Page, though, you'll avoid most trouble, although there is a "Castle Defender" game where the object is to help a knight aim his arrow to shoot oncoming marauders, often through the head. Ick.
There's also an odd little chat environment called "Penguin Chat." There is no object. You become a penguin, walk around throwing snowballs at other people, tell canned jokes, and dance to the igloo band. You can also type things to other players; at the time of review it was mostly "ASL" (age-sex-location and the like).
Families can talk about how some Web sites make it difficult to distinguish ads from content. Where are the ads on this site? Have you ever clicked on an ad by accident, thinking it was a game? Families can also discuss what's a good amount of time for playing online games and can draw up some guidelines for balanced use.
