What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this activity resource site for parents and teachers isn't so much geared for kids -- although they'll reap the benefits from the many creative craft ideas. There is a section for games with a few educational gems, but several were not functioning at the time of this review. And, pop-up ads abound; banner ads run on the top and on the right side of the pages. That said, the crafts only require items you probably have lying around the house, and the terrific templates (customizable word finds, bingo cards, and memory games) sure are handy.

What's it about?

Find yourself stuck inside on a rainy day with antsy kids? A bounty of autumn craft ideas, coloring pages, recipes, and printable activities await you at DLTK'S AUTUMN ACTIVITIES. Many of the printable games and puzzles are customizable by level, color, and theme. Some are appropriate for children as young as 2, though most are geared for ages 4 to 10. The highlight is definitely the mass number of crossword puzzles, word mines, bingo cards, mazes, dominoes, cryptograms, and various types of coloring pages to print (no registration is required). Craft ideas vary in appeal; most require only household items and provide easy-to-use printable templates. The site also has a library of other themes (holidays, cartoon characters, transportation, etc.) for fun outside of fall.

Is it any good?

Not all the online games worked at the time of this review, and most were yawners (with the exception of an addicting hangman game), but the printable games and craft activities are definitely worth checking out.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about how to manage pop-up ads when browsing through a Web site. Do you know that pop-up windows sometimes appear over the page you're looking at and some are opened and automatically minimized in their taskbar? Flashing buttons and animations may make clicking on ads tempting, but when should you? Families can show kids how to close pop-ups with the "x" in the right top corner.
