Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this easy-to-navigate reference site delivers straight-up information and tidbits to tweens -- covering safe, informative topics such as sports stats and governments around the world.

Families can talk about why going directly to a trusted source on the Internet is much better than just browsing around and landing on a site aimed at adults. Parents can also explain why curiosity about the world can enrich our lives (and help us do better in school!). Kids: Did you know that the days of the week come from characters in Norse mythology? Or that Indonesia is made up of more than 13,000 islands? What other fun facts can you find on this site?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Amy Weaver Dorning

WORLDALMANACFORKIDS.COM would make your old homeroom teacher proud -- you know, the one who was always grousing about the fact that kids didn't know their geography or how the government really works. Parents who want to give their kids a dose of old-fashioned, fact-based learning, will find that this site fits the bill. Covering everything from space to sports, WorldAlmanacforKids.com may not delve as deeply into each topic as some sites (check out NASA's Space Place for all things science, for example), but the breadth of information is so impressive that it will likely become a family favorite for fast fact finding. The game and quiz section is a little thin (basically Sudoku), and the graphics aren't particularly exciting (mostly photos), but it's so jammed with the kinds of tidbits kids love -- like the fact that only female mosquitoes can bite humans -- that tween users may just forget that there's no flash animation.

For other good learning sites, head on over to New York City's library site or HowStuffWorks.com.
