Parents need to know that this is an online social networking site that includes a great deal of digital media sharing in the way of videos, images, and audio. It requires registration to upload media, but users only need to provide their name, email, country, and birthdate. The site makes an effort to keep digital sharing positive, and monitors all media closely to ensure this.
What's it about?
YMEX.ORG (Youth Media Exchange) is an online social networking site where youth can go to share digital media and ideas about certain global issues. It is part of a collaborative project by TakingITGlobal and GlobalKids, in association with the Asia Society. Users can upload videos, blogs, images, and audio to connect with others and expand cross-cultural communication.
Is it any good?
Although online social networking has come under much scrutiny of late, it is ymex.org's mission to keep the purpose and spirit of their Web site positive and empowering to youth across the world who want to engage and create social change in an ever-increasingly interconnected world. There is some content that might be inappropriate for young kids, (one poem about HIV mentions condoms, for example), but for teens who feel emboldened for social change and aim to connect with others who feel the same way, while increasing their knowledge of digital media sharing, this is a good place to begin.
