    One character defends the necessity of slavery. A brother opposes the wishes of his family and leaves to fight for the South. Some young men clamor for war; townspeople express hatred for Southerners and call for them to be lynched.
  • Violence:

    Graphic reports of battles. Jethro is attacked, and his family is threatened by mob violence. The family's barn is attacked by an angry band of men. The death of a brother and near death of a friend of the family.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.

    Not an issue.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    perfect for kids 11 and up

    very intereasting boring in the beggining then it pick up to the climax then went back to the falling point

    terrible book

    I hated this book i had to read it for a book report and i fell asleep in every chapter im not even kidding. i DO NOT recommend this book for any person dead or alive

    The History in this book was amazing!!

    I loved the history in this book. It showed all the battles and the Generals!!!!!!!!!! Irene Hunt did a fantastic job telling about the history!!
