Intense poems of meth addiction; read with teens.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Kristina lies, steals, and neglects her young son -- all so she can keep doing drugs. The consequences are made painfully obvious.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Some fairly graphic depictions of sex, including a first orgasm and "Something dark. Perverse." Kristina's boyfriend doesn't mind when he finds her in bed with his cousin. By the end of the book, Kristina is pregnant again.
  • Language:

The mature subject matter is matched with plenty of mature language, including the F-word, "s--t," etc.
  • Consumerism:

7-11 and McDonalds are mentioned, but not in a glamorous light.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Kristina's addiction to crystal meth is at the center of this story. She not only uses the drug constantly, but also deals it for the Mexican Mafia.

What Parents Need to Know

About Glass

Parents need to know that this book is about a girl's drug addiction: Not only does Kristina use meth constantly, but eventually she deals it for the Mexican Mafia. There are some fairly graphic depictions of sex, including a first orgasm and doing "Something dark. Perverse." Kristina's drug use gets her kicked out of the house; eventually she loses custody of her young son and begins committing crimes to support her habit (even robbing her mother). By the end of the book, Kristina is pregnant again.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about sequels. Why do you think the author decided to write another installment of this story? If your kids read her first book, Crank, they can compare and contrast the two -- did they learn anything new about Kristina, her family, or drug abuse? Families can talk about the popularity of the series and what they think sparked that trend.

    Its a very Inspiring book.

I love both Crank and Glass. Im a fussy book reader and this one had me hooked, it gets very graphic so I suggest kids that dont know about sex shouldnt Read this, it tells kids out there how serious drugs and sex is. the author has so many good books (4) and there all good Impulse I would also recrimend because it is also a must read

I Love the Book! Not Meant For Virgin Eyes.

I loved the book Glass, by Ellen Hopkins. It was a quick read due to its gripping story and the page layouts. The book is so well written you can almost imagine yourself there, along for the ride with Kristina.

Perfect for older teenagers, not 12, 13 or 14 year olds....

Although it gives many bad message it is a great book! Many kids can relate to it (not in the ways your thinking) and teaches us many important leason about life...I would recommend this book to anyone 15+, I read it at 12 and I didn't get any of it...really confusing for the young mind.
