WAIST OF TIME!!!!!!
THIS IS THE WORST BOOK EVER WRITTEN IN HISTORY!! I had to read it for a history class and i hate it! It is the most BORING book ever published! It is so STUPID! It goes on and on and on about every little detail! For example, "Jethro went into town, he got to eat at a RESTAURANT and he got APPLE PIE! He walked with his right foot, then his left, right, left, right, left, and on and on and on. Then! He sat down then he carefully lifted his pie to his mouth and chewed slowly, savoring every piece...... and on and ON and ON!" Except in the book, it would have gone 20 pages about HOW he chewed and so on and so fourth.... AGAIN THIS IS EXTREMELY BORING. this book should really be revised to this: "Jethro is a very boring 10 year old boy who lives in a very boring town with his very boring family. Anyone who reads this book is promised to die of boredom. THE END." ;) I would NNNNNOOOOOTTTTT recomend this book to ANYONE!!!!!!

Dull.
I thought this book would be pretty good. Unfortunately, it was incredibly dull and monotonous to read. Here's where the author went wrong: she chose to make the protagonist a person in the Civil War's younger brother. She should have made the protagonist somebody who was actually in the Civil War. It would have been much better that way.

Good Book
I am an eighth grader in Ohio, and this book was in our curriculum. I am appalled at the comments posted by children of my age that use improper grammar, and are down right rude and offensive. I've noticed many of the reviews mention a high amount of violence. I won't launch into a rant on this, but that's how things were, and we can't learn from our mistakes if books are sugar-coated. The descriptions are not that graphic. I think this book has positive messages because it tells a story of how a family endures it's hard times in a decent way. Overall, it was a good book. It was slow to start, but once it started, it was quite interesting to read about life back in the times of the Civil War. I enjoyed the bit of romance between Shadrach and Jenny. I feel it lit up the novel, showing how love can even blossom in the midst of death and war. It was a good book, and I would reccomend it.

not too great
Across Five Aprils is by far the worst book i've ever read. i thought that the book would place scenes at the real battle, not just talk about it! It just talked about love or death, but........ if you love educational books than this one is for you.

Good book for Middle Schoolers
It gives you a good taste of what the Civil war was like.

The History in this book was amazing!!
I loved the history in this book. It showed all the battles and the Generals!!!!!!!!!! Irene Hunt did a fantastic job telling about the history!!

I loved the history!!!
I thought that the book was great. It told of the Civil War through a boys point of view that had to stay home with his family. It had love, family, and war in it.

The book is quite violent in some parts, but more than that, it's just BORING. I had to read it for school, and I have to admit, though it's NOT a good idea, I did skip some pages. At the climax it got better, but by the climax there were only about 30 or 40 pages left in the book. I don't really suggest reading it to anybody, because I don't want to waste their time.

it depends
well, it not easy to read and it depends on a person. If your kid likes books about war and how people do kill each other as soon as war is not only pretty uniform and beautifully trained soldiers. This book perfectly describes how war can change someone's life. However, it s a good book yo read in grade 9 as it has lots of history events.

Okay
This book is pretty boring at first and the dialogue is hard to read until you get used to it, but by the end you really feel something for Jethro and his family. Maybe the reason I didn't like this book so much was because it we had to read it for school.
