Parents need to know

Parents need to know that at $9.95/month, this game is more expensive than most children's software, but it is constantly growing and changing. It offers a tremendous amount of entertainment that can be enjoyed over several months. Parents should monitor their child's continued interest in the program to determine how long they want to subscribe to the game. Many parents have enjoyed playing this online game with their kids. At times, other kids can be rude in how they use the drop-down menu phrases, or by ignoring or running away from you, but most experiences are positive ones.

Families can talk about what makes playing this game so much fun. Is it the other toons (kids) that you interact with or the quests you go on? Since there is always more to do, is it hard to sign off? What do you do when someone is rude to you?

What's the story?

Reviewed by Jinny Gudmundsen

The gist of TOONTOWN ONLINE (www.toontown.com), a nonviolent massively multiplayer online game for children, is that kids become toons who go on quests so that they can become more powerful toons and gain laff points. All toons are trying to rid Toontown of the pesky businesslike Cog robots. Toons defeat the Cogs by using gags on them, including throwing pies in their faces, or squirting them with fake flowers. They purchase gags after earning jellybeans by playing fun Trolley Games. Toontown locks kids into a safe online environment where they can talk to others who are playing the game, but only from pre-scripted drop-down menus. Friends who know each other outside of the game can exchange passwords to permit instant messaging between the two during the game.

Is it any good?

5
Part of the fun of playing in Toontown is that it is constantly evolving and changing. In December 2003, Disney introduced the first Cog Headquarters (Cog HQ) neighborhood to Toontown and since then, there have been many more. The Cog HQs adds depth and complexity for experienced players -- those who have been playing long enough to have amassed about 60 or more laff points.

This virtual world is an exciting place to explore not only because it constantly offers new puzzles, games, and activities but also because it’s fun to play with others while saving this world from robotic destruction. Families can check out the free portion of the game before committing to the full subscription membership.

How to play

  • Playability: Offers a tremendous amount of playability
  • Reading Required: Light
  • Graphics: Excellent. It is fun being a toon!

I Started Playing, and Now I'm Hooked!

I joined Toontown 3 years ago, then stopped. I recently started playing again, and I can't stop!! Not even listening to Breakout (the best album!) will make me stop!! I like how now you can report Toons if they are doing something bad/rude, such as a bad name. I play so much that 2 days ago I made a Toon and now it has 27 Laff Points (health). Also, all my other Toons have at least 44 Laff Points. It's fun to play with other kids from anywhere and work together on ToonTasks, especially defeating the VP/CFO/CJ/CEO (I can defeat all of them). Princess Ladybug Poodlecrunch, Savvy, Mandy (Savvy & Mandy LOL), Black Kitty Wonder, Zoey, and Little Miss Purfect Princess are so fun to play!

good website but high prices.

Toontown I think is a hilarios website with fun things and stuff. But the membership prices are HIGH. But it is kinda worth it because you can play more things and go into cog buildings and catch different types of fish. But a non member can't do all those stuff. But still overall toontown is a good fun and secure website. (I got a free onemonth membership to toontown! Also i'm 9)

Good luck trying to Cancel!

When my daughter was younger, 9-10 years she enjoyed playing. Now that is she is older, we wanted to cancel because she had not been on in over a year. They make it a nightmare to try and cancel. You cannot cancel on line. I have now made 5 phone calls to them all take 30 minutes or more before a rep even answers! I cannot get charge off my card. The game is fun til you no longer want it, and then you are stuck!

Addictive

Personally I was smitten with Toon Town; I'd find myself humming the theme at work! Over time, however, it's clearly become a source of defiant behavior from my 10 year old son. The community is not a positive social venue for my son. There are sinister-appearing characters, and the violence is considerable despite the seemingly "safe" confines of a Disney product. If allowed, he'd spend hours at the game. When not allowed to play Toon Town, after a disgruntled couple days he no longer argues, he attends to his chores, and his school work benefits. Upon revisiting the game he is argumentative, flippant, and sluggish getting to his studies. We have never witnessed this behavior with other computer or on-line games. I am not trying to propose some subliminal agenda by some software whiz at Disney; they're not trying to possess our children. But the recurrent behaviors around Toon Town have led to our cancelling our subscription.

No problems with this game except for some people being rude with some speedchat phrases and discriminating against toons that might have less experience or not big enough gags or high enough laff points.

My family loves TOONTOWN!

We have been members of Toontown for years. We are homeschoolers and joined when my oldest was almost 8. She was struggling with reading & I was worried about her falling behind. She saw me playing a demo of Toontown & she wanted to play. I let her & I was amazed at how hard she worked to improve her reading skills. She was at the age she didn't want mommy's help all the time. Playing Toontown really helpd boost her reading skills. She is now 11 & all my kids enjoy it. So do I!

Not just for kids!

This game is great for kids, AND adults. Not an intense game, so true "gamers" won't be interested. I'm addicted though, and it's fun to play with my kids. This game sorta tricks kids into learning too - there are elements of math and logic, language (learning to use the canned phrases to convey ideas and intent), and the value of friendships and alliances, and helping each other through difficult tasks. If I had to describe a downside to the game (besides the hefty subscription fee) I'd have to say it's how addicted kids get to it. I certainly have had to limit computer time or my two kids would be on Toontown 24/7!

Fun but also with some issues

My son and I wrote this review together. I pointed out that toons cooperate with each other, but he also mentioned to me about toons being rude or mean online. He has had a lot of fun learning toontown strategies and there is a lot to do in this game. Also, there is not a lot of violence. However, we have had some problems with some of the rude behavior from toon town spilling into our family life, which has been a negative part. A pretty fun online game that kids get hooked on!!! Over all it has brought our family more fun than trouble.
