Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–16

The good stuff

  • Ease of play:

The online manual and in-game tutorial are not comprehensive. Players with some experience in playing MMOGs will have a much easier time with this game than players new to the genre. Camera angles and targeting can be awkward especially for new players.
  • Educational value:

This game teaches the importance of team work and cooperation as harder objectives can only be attained through team work.
  • Messages:

The message of the game is positive as characters are asked to help the in-game characters in quests and to protect the cities and villages. Players go on a heroes journey to do the best they can and participate in team versus team gameplay.
  • Role models:

The characters in game generally request for help to protect the town or to do some other good deed to benefit the town or society

What to watch out for

  • Online interaction:

This game is played online with open chat. While filters are in place to keep out offensive language, wily players can sometimes figure out ways to bypass these systems. the game offers an "ignore" list where you can place players who are ignoring the filters.
  • Violence:

Fantasy Violence. No blood, nor gore. However, this is a fantasy role-playing game that involves killing creatures to advance in the game.
  • Sex:

Characters wear sexy, revealing clothing and bikini sets can be bought in-game. Cleavage is shown.
  • Language:

This game has open chat can lead to inappropriate language being used; however, a chat filter is in place for stronger words and it cannot be turned off.
  • Consumerism:

The game is free to play, but convenience items allow players to level faster in the game. Cosmetic items are also available for purchase.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent was written by Carolyn Koh

Parents need to know that this is a massively multiplayer online game where children can encounter people from all over the world. Chat is open although a "naughty word" chat filter is in place and an "ignore" list is available on which to place the foul-mouthed players so their chat is not displayed. Playing within this attractive world with animated machines can be compelling, so you may find that children do not want to quit playing. The game is free to play, but attractive items such as lizard mounts that players can ride and holiday outfits cost real money to purchase, as do items that are used up, such as health potions and increased experience items.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about online social behavior and boundaries. Why should you not give out personal information online?  Do you think what you do in game reflects upon you as a person?
  • Families can also talk about in-game consumerism and money lessons. Free to play games are "free" up to a point as they monetize by micro-transactions, the selling of small items in game. Do you really need that Health or Experience potion when you can get them in game? Why do you need to have flashy outfits for your avatar?

More on Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent

What’s the Story?

NEO STREAM: THE SHATTERED CONTINENT is set in a post-apocalyptic world which was destroyed because of the mis-management of a natural resource, Neo Steam. There are two nations in game and players must choose one to play in and this leads up to player versus player battles in the end game. Neo Steam is based on the Fantasy sub-genre known as Steampunk, which makes use of steam-driven fantasy machines. Otherwise, this is your standard hack-and-slash fantasy game where players kill creatures to gain experience, items and in-game gold.  Close

Is It Any Good?

Neo Steam does not stand out in MMO genre; but neither does it play badly and players may well enjoy playing in this online fantasy RPG in a Steampunk setting. Graphics are soft and colorful featuring stylistic submarines, dirigibles, flying machines, and animated machines that are unique and attractive. Players familiar with MMOGs will find it easier to get into this game than others, but players new to MMOGs may find the learning curve a little steep as some features in-game are not very well explained. The detached camera can make navigation difficult for players not used to it. Movement is with the WASD key or point and click. However, targeting and fighting is also accomplished with the mouse, making targeting difficult and it is easy for players to run into a monster instead of targeting it.
