Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a very scary movie with intense peril and upsetting deaths. For those who have dealt with loss, the killer, "Charlie" will be especially disturbing since he wins Emily as a friend when she most needs someone to help her. Issues of trust and the suffering of main characters, including a child, are themes in this movie. Relationships are strained by inability of characters to handle trauma. There is social drinking, infidelity, and implied psychological spousal abuse.

Families can talk about why Emily did not feel like she could talk about her emotions directly and what other characters might have done to let Emily know she was not alone. What does the last picture that we see on-screen mean about Emily and about the future?

What's the story?

Reviewed by Nell Minow

In this atmospheric thriller, widower Dr. David Callaway (Robert De Niro) moves his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) to a woodsy town in upstate New York to help her escape the memories of his wife's suicide. In Woodland, they meet the local police officer, the jumpy real estate agent, and a married couple who live next door, trying to cope with the recent loss of their daughter, who was Emily's age. David reaches out to child psychiatrist Katherine (Famke Jannson), who is the understanding adult trying to help Emily and coach David through the grieving process. Emily starts talking about all the fun games she is playing with "Charlie," her imaginary friend. The disfigured dolls, scrawled threats, and dead cat that follow alarm David enough to leave his study, where he spends most of the day. Emily's strange drawings hint that Charlie might be positioning himself to be Emily's only friend, and the mysterious death that follows finally drives father and daughter to action. To say anything more would make Charlie very, very angry.

Is it any good?

HIDE AND SEEK features strong acting, and the film's quiet scenes are more terrifying than on-screen mayhem. Most of the movie comprises a slow but steady-paced thriller with the camera drinking in little Emily's eerie stare and propensity for standing in the doorway whenever something spooky is happening. The last twenty minutes of the movie will satisfy audiences looking for a cathartic terror and a good twist. For some jaded audiences, however, the ending might seem self-conscious, forced, and dragged-out, especially when Charlie's secret is revealed.

Robert De Niro gives a solid but uninspired performance, and Dakota Fanning does a lovely job in this movie, out-acting the grown-ups with breathtaking grace and dignity. She genuinely seems to break, well, just like a little girl during the big showdown.

A great film for teens... a VERY soft "R" and a great weekend scare...

This movie, like it says above, is a great weekend scare. It's a lot of fun. Creepy, scary, a cool climax, great acting, FUN. And it's absolutely okay for any teenager. (unless you know your kid is sensitive to this stuff) There are some violent images and blood, and of course it is VERY scary, but any teenager can handle it. So go and rent it this Friday, you'll have a LOT of fun.

Lame...lame...and lame...

This was probably one of the most torturous, boring movies I have ever been unlucky enough to sit through. Robert DeNiro: Thank you for your wonderful acting; it gives this movie at least a little light of hope. But as for the rest of it, the movie was boring, dull, lame, and lacked that special "edge-of-your-seat" finesse most psychological thrillers require in order to be classified as that...a psychological THRILLER! Hands down one of the worst movies I've ever seen...

A must see!!!

This is one of the best psychological thrillers i have ever seen. Dakota played a character that we normally don't see her playing, she played in Uptown Girls and others but this one portrayed her as mysterious with her playmate Charlie. Who is he, is he real? These questions were in my head the whole movie, it was suspenseful and me and my friend were gripped to eachother the whole movie. The violence wasn't too graphic, there was very little blood and the language wasn't bad for an R or even a pg-13. There was no sex and it was a very good, jumpy, movie... that is a must see for anyone 13 and up.

AMAZING movie.

Sex: none. references to *Spoiler wife having an affair* and Emily says Charlie said he could please Mommy. Violence: multiple references to Emily's mother's suicide, 1 death by shovel, a few shootings, a dead cat in a bathtub and a woman falls out a window. (very minimal blood shown with the woman) language: one f-word.

Go Dakota!

Well, I am one of Dakota Fanning's biggest fans so of course I have to watch every movie she's in. I really enjoyed this one. She did an amazing job in this one. I actually didn't find this movie to be that scary or violent. I think it could have received a PG-13 rating instead of R, but it's definitely too scary for kids under 12 or 13. There is some suspense, and mild violence, although none of it was graphic. I didn't hear any cussing except for one word at the end. Overall I loved the movie because it's very suspenseful without being too scary and it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.

It was creepy with an unexpected ending.

I loved it. Little children would not understand or be too scared, but for older teens and up, it's a great edge-of-your-seat movie.

Great movie!

This is a great psychological-thriller movie! Sure, I was scared and stuff, but that's part of the experience, kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I wouldn't let timid, sensitive, or easily-impressionable kids/tweens watch this, but if they were mature and/or older, it's a great movie for them. Def. worth the watch.
