Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this film is absolutely not for kids. The premise and primary "plot" is torture, specifically, the torture of young travelers by wealthy adults who pay thousands of dollars for the experience. These images are graphic and bloody (severed limbs, penetrated genitals, sliced Achilles tendon, gouged eye, with weapons including scissors, chainsaws, knives, hammers, drills, clippers, guns, cars, and chairs). One character throws herself in front of a train when she sees her disfigurement following torture. These violent scenes are preceded by a sojourn in Amsterdam, featuring girls' breasts and one frontal nudity shot. Characters engage in boisterous sex and a man makes a homosexual pass at an unwilling young man. Characters smoke, drink, and do multiple sorts of drugs. Characters use frequent foul language (over 100 f-words, derogatory terms like "faggot" and, in this context, "gay," slang for genitals, "damn," "hell").

Families can talk about the film's rudimentary moral lessons. What lessons is the film trying to convey about backpacking through Europe or class disparities? Or, you might consider the film's evocations of movie conventions, appeals to genre connoisseurs (including homages to executive producer Quentin Tarantino). Are these images cynical responses to a violent world or incisive commentary on violence in media?

Message

Social Behavior:

Consumerism:

Bars advertise brands of beer.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Language

Over 100 uses of the f-word in various forms, plus slang for genitals and sexual behaviors, plus assorted uses of "damn," "Jesus," and "hell."

What's the story?

Reviewed by Cynthia Fuchs

American backpackers Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) are traveling with their new friend Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson), each trying hard to impress the others with his capacity for partying. In Amsterdam, they're amazed by the availability of sex, marijuana, and hash, all of these indulgences featured in graphic imagery. The boys are thrilled to learn from the ultra-skeezy Alex (Lubomir Silhavecky) that a hostel in Slovakia promises even more loose girls and more potent drugs. They hop on a train tout de suite. Here they're forewarned of the mayhem to come when a fellow traveler, an older Dutchman (Jan Vlasák), makes an unwanted pass at Josh. Still, the boys' cockiness only escalates when they meet a few girls who do indeed seem enthralled with them, in particular Natalya (Barbara Nedeljáková) and Svetlana (Jana Kaderabkova). Soon enough, everyone is intoxicated and having sex, and one by one, the boys disappear. When he wakes up tied to a chair with a spastic German man whizzing a chainsaw over him, Paxton eventually pieces together that they have been kidnapped for use in torture rituals by wealthy customers who pay to abuse and kill pretty young tourists.

Is it any good?

2
HOSTEL is as brutal a film as you're likely to see this year. This is definitely NOT for kids.

The fact that Paxton must pose as one of the clients, and, while wearing rubber aprons, endure a conversation with an anxious first-timer (Rick Hoffman) suggests the film's other agenda, the one that's not just grossing out and repulsively titillating an audience familiar with gore conventions. Whether or not Paxton recognizes his own consumerist frenzy in this pompous, too-excited goon, you can hardly miss the mirror images of grasping for hedonistic experiences at the expense of "native" cultures and compliant objects.

Why? Why? WHY?

Is all I can ask myself about some of these "horror" movies nowadays? Does sex and over-the-top brutal murders constitute as a great movie? This movie had two different sides. Porn. And Murder. There was hardly an in between and deserves no more than one star for such a disaster of a movie. I could hardly watch some of the scenes in this movie. It seems it's become a battle among writers as to who can think up the most disgusting slaughter fest, and it5's not very enjoyable.

Thriller for Adult and Teens

I really did like this movie because its more of a thriller/suspense movie rather than scary, but it really is quite full of gore. Graphic scenes of torture definately not made for the faint of heart.

I can't believe I didn't walk out!

This movie is a true disgrace for what society has made a 'norm' for a rated R movie. This movie is half porn and half torture - 100% waste of any decent person's time. This movie needed a much different rating than R. For the sake of our children and american society as a whole our standards for what we allow to fall into the rated R category need to be revisited!

I'd like my money back thanks.... HOWEVER.........

I have a few more productive things to say about this film. I was nightmare-ishly disturbed for days.. however... for there to be controversy over a film is really quite ridiculous! It's up to the individual person to decide what is right and wrong for them. Directors have every right to make any movie they want too.. last time I checked.. we were all individuals with our own tastes!! NOW ON THE OTHER HAND... FOR THE PARENTS WHO ALLOWED CHILDREN TO EVEN WATCH THIS FILM... I'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU.. IN WHICH I WILL CONTACT YOUR LOCAL CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES!! THERE SHOULD BE NO ARGUMENT WHATSOEVER THAT THIS IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY APPROPRIATE FOR A CHILD. IT IS NOT OK FOR A CHILD TO SEE SEX... AND GORE OF THIS MAGNITUDE!!! NO MATTER THE CHILD!!!!!! INTRODUCING STUFF OF THIS KIND TO A CHILD IS IRRISPONSIBLE!! IF WE DENSENSITIZE OUR CHILDREN THAT EARLY... WHAT IS LEFT FOR THEM TO LEARN?? IM TRUELY SICK TO MY STOMACH THAT ANY PARENT WOULD ACTUALLY SEE THIS AS AN OK MOVIE. TWICE NOW I'VE BEEN TO VERY GRAPHIC HORROR FILMS... IN WHICH A PARENT BROUGHT THEIR CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS AGE 5 (INTO SAW II) AND I WAS SO HORRIFIED I ACTUALLY LEFT. TOTAL MOOD KILLER!! ANOTHER WAS IN THE MESSENGERS... WHILE IT ISN'T GRAPHIC.. IT HAS SOME SCARY SCENES. THE 4 YEAR OLD IN FRONT OF ME WAS CRYING.. HER MOTHER LOOKED AT HER AND SAID.. YOU KNOW ITS NOT REAL.. SHUT THE F**K UP AND QUIT CRYING. ARE PARENTS SO SELFISH THAT THEY CAN'T WAIT TO FIND A BABYSITTER .. INSTEAD WE TAKE OUR CHILDREN TO HORROR FILMS WITH US?? SO WHEN A CHILD AT AGE 12 SAYS HOSTEL ISN'T BAD.. IT'S USUALLY THE RESULT OF BEING DESENSITIZED FROM AN EARLIER AGE. Well I think that pretty much wraps it up... I'm disguisted.. and horrified at parents bad decisions these days because of their own selfish desires!!

Absolutely disgusting

I consider myself to be a pretty open-minded parent, but I refuse to ever let my kids watch this flick. Truly demented, the story line is supspensful, yes, but the imagery was enough to cloud my entire day. Not only was the movie's context brutal enough to keep you from every stepping foot into a European hostel again, but some scenes left me literally gagging, trying to keep my lunch down. Two words: EYE SCENE.

Very Good!

This movie was really good. I thought that the sexuality was a bit much. (Because eventually it was like porn.) Other than that I didn't see very many problems even though it did have some funny parts. Most people wouldn't agree with me though.

It started out good, but lost itself to gore (and it wasn't even scary!)

This movie started out better than most horror films, making me think that this could actually be a good movie and also be a horror movie with a plot. However, the movie loses itself about halfway through to pointless gore and carnage. The gore wasn't that bad actually until it reached the last thirty minutes, and you could tell the director wanted to hold no bars with the blood there. It starts out interesting and it does cleverly tie things together like one of the character's past traumas and how it motivates him to try and save another person. But the plot never really evolves much, it just places small parts in front of you every once in a while. As a story, it'a average. Content however, is extreme in all areas, though the violence doesn't reach too high until the end as I mentioned earlier. Sexuality is what makes up most of the objectable content in the first third of the movie, with explicit images and suggestions. Violence then comes in doses until it heats up more and became more graphic. My complaint about it however is that it seems movie makers think blood in of itself is scary, so the violence that causes it doesn't have any scare factors to it at all. Never, throughout the whole movie, was I scared (albeit I have a high tolerance for violence and terror, but still.) Language is pervasive throughout the movie, but not in a way that it's overly excessive due to the situations the characters are placed in. All I can say is, what tipped the violence from being not as bad as it sounds to actually holding up to the descriptions: the eye. If you watch this movie, you will know what I'm talking about, and I would hope you agree with me that that was too much. However, for the rest of the violence, it wasn't quite as bad as I had expected, and I must admit that I have only seen about 7 rated R films, and most of those are the ones where the only thing bad is the language (such as Good Will Hunting). So despite the good beginning, the end parts quickly flush it from your mind and leave you with bland attempts at horror that do anything but scare you.
