Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–16

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Christian aid workers show bravery by continuing their mission in the face of danger. Rambo, as always, decides to take matters in his own hands to help the mercenaries assigned to rescue the missionaries. Lots of male bravado, but the woman character does show she's committed to her cause.
  • Violence:

From the opening news reel of atrocities being committed in Burma, the film is -- save for a few early sequences -- nonstop violence. People are shot, burned alive, blown up, stabbed, hacked, hanged, and raped. Women are shown taunted and then about to be raped. Children are killed. Limbs fly around as bombs and land mines are triggered. Heads explode or are decapitated and bodies dismembered. Name a weapon, and it's used -- arrows, knives, handguns, automatic weapons, etc.
  • Sex:

Young women are forced to dance in front of their brutal captors. They're then hit, and their clothes are ripped off (breasts are visible) as they're about to be raped. Sarah touches Rambo's hand and embraces Michael. A boy is shown escorted to the general's quarters, where the general caresses his head and face before shutting the door.
  • Language:

As with most military action flicks, the language is ever-present -- "f--k" is the most uttered word, with "s--t" and "a--hole" close seconds.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

The Burmese soldiers drink heavily during the pre-rape dance scene.

What Parents Need to Know

About Rambo

Parents need to know that the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise is, like its '80s predecessors, full of blood and violence (rendered even more disturbing by the last two decades' technological advances). The main character is a one-man killing machine; when pushed to defend himself or others, he'll use anything -- from his bare hands to a rock to a weapon -- to destroy his enemies. Despite being 61, Stallone still has a considerable following, although most of his biggest fans are men old enough to be fathers at this point. While younger kids may not be interested, teen boys may well want to see what all the fuss is about this iconic character. In addition to the disturbing amount of violence, there's also a great deal of strong language and an awful scene that's clearly the prelude to a gang rape.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether the amount of violence in this movie is fitting, given its subject matter. Are there times when violence needs to be graphic to get a filmmaker's point across? Why or why not? What's the appeal of explicit violence in the movies? What effects does watching this kind of content have? The fact that violent movies stimulate parts of the brain bears some commentary from the parental units.

Perfect move, really only the language is a problem

I love this movie, there is profanity, and some other issues, but there is no nude, even though the rating says it has some, a great overall movie, Rambo is a very good role model, ie. saving missionarries from the burmese fort, rushing in to save the mercenaries at the end of the movie, and saving some burmese prisoners from the burmese soldiers, ther is a lot of violence and gore, ut its rambo, what would you expect from it, i personally cant wait til the fith comes out in 2011, yea thats right theres another one coming out, google it.

Awesome, but not for little kids.

This is byfar the best Rambo yet! But also the most, bloody, gory and violent. Decapitations, shootings, burnings and slicing, enough reasons to see why 10 year olds and down shouldn't see this movie?

Probably the most violent/bloody action film of all time, if you hate violence, do not watch this. There is also swearing and sexual content. It's a fairly good action/rambo film though.

    OVERKILL!!!!!

wow i watch a lot of bloody fouled mouthed flicks but rambo pushes it with violence. It is so realistic with chunks of body parts everywhere. There are sevral extensive scenes in which man kill women and children in extremley graphic ways. Rambo gets on a giant machine gun and for about 11 minutes he and mercenaries and rebels brutally blow the burmese army to chunks in various ways there are so many other instances like this involving guns knives flame throwers machine guns and sniper rifles and rambo actually rips out peoples intestines and (sorry just one more i can go on forever with this movie) Rambo shoots people with a pistol blood splatters everywhere 29 f words and 1 c--t sevral other words

A film for only people who are 17 and up. But it still may be unsuitable for some.

Rambo is probably one of the most violent movies you will ever seen

John Rambo is yet back a fourth time around kicking butt and saying quotes as if he's acting tough. While the first twenty minutes does have a slow pace there's no problem after that. After the dreadful twenty minutes I never looked at the clock once. Then when I did, the movie was over. Despite the slow, first half hour of this movie, Rambo is very fast paced. The movie is violent. For, sexual content, girls are raped but you never see the action taken place and you don't hear the act. We don't see any nudity. Note, the rape scenes are loosely implied and there are only a few of those. As for violence, the body count here is so high, even a mathematician couldn't count. There is dismemberment, stabbing, shooting, disembowelment, decapitations, and more violent acts that occur on-screen. For profanity, while it isn't pervasive as other R rated films it still has it's share of language. There are about 30+ f words and its derivatives. Some anatomical terms, scatological terms, mild obscenities, religious exclamations, and religious profanities. I would highly recommend this movie to any die hard Rambo fan. This film is definitely bloody and very gory.

Most violent movie I have ever seen

WOW this was violent. It was unlike anything I have ever seen. I have no idea how it got only a 16 from this website. Throats are ripped out, heads explode, organs are sliced out, small children are shot and cut into pieces in graphic detail on screen. If this is not the most violent movie you've ever seen... thats scary

A great movie with great depth

First off, this movie is being rated WAY too unfairly. People say that its excessive violence, and that its not needed. I have a wake-up call THIS IS REALLY GOING ON! Rambo has enough guts to go out and show people what really is happening out there. Furthermore, people who didnt expect this movie to be violent obviously need help dressing themselves. ITS RAMBO FOR GOD SAKE! Lets face it, the only reason people recieved this movie the wrong way is: 1. Its not about Iraq 2. We dont care about problems in other countries because, quite frankly, they dont have any oil over there.. Bravo Rambo, for bringing some serious issues to our eyes.

Rambo's most action packed film yet.

Ok, my dad rented it and said I could watch it with him (im 14) but he and my mother watched "I want someone to eat cheese with" so to my surprise, he said I could watch it. ( I cant watch any to most r-rated films) Violence is "out the whazoo" with gun shot, after arrow shot, to explosion all throughout, and as glad I was to watch it, it was intense. Sex is like the scene where the bermese soldiers constantly taunt the dancer, but other than that, its nothing a 14+ has never seen. There are a lot of uses of F***s and a lota sh**s so language is pretty big. no real comercialism, a lot of drinking and a little smoking. Social behavior is rambo killing the bad guys, and the missionaries trying to spread the word, while convincing him to stop killing, and getting upset when he does. So I say either know your teen, or 15+. 5 stars for the action.

    Rambo at his most violent

I love the entire "Rambo" series, and this is probably one of my favorites. The only issue is the graphic and disturbing non-stop violence.
