Care Bears: Oopsy Does It!

What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Nancy Davis Kho

Issued in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Care Bears, CARE BEARS: OOPSY DOES IT! reunites familiar Care Bear characters and introduces a few new ones, as the candy-colored friends prepare the Woo-Hoo World theme park for its grand opening. As a counterpoint to the team spirit and cheer exhibited by clumsy Oopsy and his fellow Care Bears, a grumpy ursine named Grizzle plots the demise of the Care Bears and all their pesky caring, and Oopsy becomes an unwilling accomplice.

Is It Any Good?

There's little to worry about in a movie where the main characters are named Cheer, Funshine, and Share. Even Grizzle's plot to capture the bears' Belly Badges is a fun amusement park ride that has the victims begging for more. For the 4-6 year-old set, this straightforward tale has just enough drama in Grizzle's antics to keep it mildly interesting. But for the most part, the action is predictable and the relentlessly cheery characters will be a turn-off for older kids. Caregivers who do sit through this may anjoy Grizzle's funny lines and heavy-duty Napoleon complex.

A bouncy soundtrack and colorful animation heavy on hearts, puffy clouds, and rainbows are the perfect accompaniment to the lighthearted action. The Belly Badges that differentiate the three-dimensional bears are on vivid display, and may lead kids to collect them at the local toy store (surely part of the motivation behind the movie).
