Carmen
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
After the titular character in CARMEN (Melissa Barrera) witnesses her mother's death at the hands of the Mexican cartel, she escapes to the United States. Aidan (Paul Mescal), who works for the U.S. government, goes against his orders and helps those who are fleeing, including Carmen. He keeps protecting her as she makes her way to the one person left that she can call family: her mother's friend Masilda (Rossy de Palma).
Is It Any Good?
Carmen is an interesting, if unusual, film -- but this is by design, since it's told through a magical realism lens (though it's not totally clear why). With a heavy emphasis on dance, the film creates a dreamlike atmosphere that's as entrancing as it is (intentionally) off-putting. The film's craftsmanship is top-notch, as are the song-and-dance numbers. That said, it's not fully clear what the magical realism elements bring to the story. And Mexico is still portrayed as a lawless, violent country, which is far from the whole truth. Certain characters can also feel like "othered" stereotypes in the way that their characterizations rely solely on mystical, mysterious personalities. But if you love films that challenge your senses and evoke a dreamlike plane, then Carmen might be for you.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Carmen's decision. Why does she choose to leave Mexico? Why does Aidan help her?
What role does magical realism play in the film? Can you think of other movies that have used that device?
How does the film try to subvert Latino stereotypes? Does it succeed?
