Hallow Road
What's the Story?
In HALLOW ROAD, husband and wife Maddie (Rosamund Pike) and Frank (Matthew Rhys) receive a frantic late-night phone call from their daughter, Alice (Megan McDonnell), saying she's been in a road accident. Desperate to protect their child, they jump in the car and drive toward the remote Hallow Road, where Alice is awaiting the emergency services. Paramedic Maddie talks her daughter through how to help the victim, but as the minutes tick by, more and more worrying information is revealed, and Maddie, Frank, and Alice are forced to make difficult split-second decisions about what to do next.
Is It Any Good?
For the first five minutes of this engrossing British thriller, there's no dialogue or actors on-screen, just a mounting sense of tension as the camera pans around a home clearly deserted in a hurry. This sets the tone for Hallow Road, a film that relies on claustrophobic camerawork and intense acting over direct action. It does well to maintain the atmosphere over the next 80 minutes, which unravel in realtime—the achingly slow time-lapse recorded via a sat nav. Pike and Rhys are on-screen for the majority, while McDonnell is heard via a mobile phone. The only glimpse of her is the smiling, playful contact photo that comes up each time there's a call, which is at jarring odds with the panic-stricken voice on the other end. As the minutes tick on, not only is Alice's position revealed as increasingly precarious, but Maddie and Frank struggle to keep their own buried tensions under control. And that's a central theme here: everyone is trying to control a nightmare situation that's ultimately already too far gone. It packs a strong emotional punch, as characters slip from cool reactions and rational assessments, to wide-eyed panic and complete loss of direction. There are surprises throughout and an unexpected twist toward the end, which will keep viewers on their toes, but the final few minutes may lose the faith of more pragmatic viewers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the setting of Hallow Road. The majority of the movie is filmed inside Maddie and Frank's car. How did the director stop the film from feeling monotonous? How did the movie maintain a sense of tension and urgency?
What ethical questions did the film bring up? Do you think a parent should go to any lengths to protect their child? What do you think was the best way the parents could have helped Alice here? Did you agree more with Maddie suggesting it's better to take responsibility or Frank in wanting to take that away from his daughter?
Talk about the strong language used in the movie. Did it seem necessary, or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?
How were drinking, smoking, and drugs portrayed? Were there consequences? Did it glamorize them? Why does that matter?
