Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has made one of the year's best thrillers with a strong political message woven through it. Nominated for Best International Feature at the 2026 Oscars, It Was Just an Accident is exciting, unusual, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny in moments of dark humor that lift it above straightforward, entirely serious dramas. While the entertainment flows, the underlying message comes through loud and clear, as characters bound by their horrifying experiences in prison debate what to do with a potential chance at revenge. As they vent the effects of trauma and years of anguish, the film powerfully conveys how the acts of others can haunt people's lives. This all leads up to an ending that masterfully merges the weight of trauma with the thrill of top-tier cinema.
