What parents need to know

Parents need to know that even though this live-action fantasy based on Nickelodeon's popular Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon TV series was directed by The Sixth Sense's M. Night Shyamalan, it doesn't have much content that's inappropriate for the show's elementary-school-aged fans. There's some fighting and violence, but it's not bloody or even particularly scary. And one character gives up her life in order to save her people, but otherwise there's nothing too dark. Language and substance use aren't issues, and there's only very mild flirting between two characters, who kiss once. It's worth noting that there has been some controversy around the movie's casting, with fans objecting to Caucasian actors playing characters who are Asian in the TV series.

Positive messages: The movie promotes collaboration, teamwork, and non-violence (Aang shows the power of elements without killing anyone).
Positive role models: Kitara and Sokka selflessly agree to help Aang on his journey. Aang finally decides to accept his role as Avatar.
Violence: Most of the fight scenes aren't very graphic because the benders don't need to get very close to each other, since they can manipulate elements, particularly fire and water. But there are some martial-arts-style fight scenes, with water and fire and earth (rocks!) thrown into the mix. There's one memorable death, but it's self-sacrificial and gently handled.
Sex: One sweet kiss and some mild flirting. In one scene, an uncle tries to convince his single-minded nephew to look for a pretty girl instead of worrying so much.
Language: Mild insults about the disgraced heir of the Fire Nation and about the water and earth people.
Consumerism: Nothing in the film, but the movie is based on the popular animated Nickelodeon series and does have merchandising tie-ins.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: In one scene, the Fire Nation's commander makes a toast at a luncheon with his soldiers, but it's not clear that they're actually drinking.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how The Last Airbender movie compares to The Last Airbender cartoon. How are the characters different?
  • How does the violence in this movie compare to others you've seen? Does this kind of media violence have more or less impact than what's in other fantasy/action movies? Why?
  • Aang, like most great heroes, is on a journey. Who are his helpers? Who are his nemeses? What does he need to do overcome his obstacles?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Based on Nickelodeon's popular Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon TV series, THE LAST AIRBENDER follows titular final Airbender Aang (Noah Ringer), who's a special master of all elements -- fire, water, earth, and air -- and has the power to unite the people of all four nations. He's been frozen in a block of ice for 100 years, during which time all of the other Airbenders were killed by greedy Fire Lord Ozai (Cliff Curtis), whose nation created weaponry that has enslaved and terrorized the Earth and Water nations. When Aang is discovered by the final Waterbender, Katara (Nicola Peltz), and her older brother, Sokka (the Twilight movies' Jackson Rathbone), they agree to help him escape and free the nations. Meanwhile, the Fire Lord's banished son, Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), believes that if he can find Aang and deliver him to his father, he'll be welcomed once again among his people ... but the Fire Lord's military commander, Zhao (comedian Aasif Mandvi), wants to beat Zuko to the prize.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Director M. Night Shyamalan has a big problem. He's had five chances to prove that The Sixth Sense wasn't the film equivalent of a one-hit wonder. Even if you're being generous and say that Signs was under-appreciated, that still leaves four other films since Sense that have been at best underwhelming and at worst downright awful (The Happening). The Last Airbender is at least the former, probably because it was an adaptation of a widely beloved cartoon series, but for a movie aimed at kids, it takes it self way too seriously. There's little joy or wonder or even humor -- all fundamentals in a movie for kids

Rathbone, who plays vampire Jasper Cullen in the Twilight movie saga, is only slightly less cold and stiff in this movie -- even though Sokka is supposed to be the comic relief. The stilted dialogue is definitely to blame; it doesn't do any of the actors any favors. Only the Avatar himself, young Noah Ringer, shows some emotion, but it's not enough to carry the movie. And even the talented Patel, who made audiences cry with his performance in Slumdog Millionaire and laugh aloud in the BBC series Skins, mopes around with a huge chip on his shoulder. But all of that will probably be forgivable for the movie's target audience of 8- to 10-year-old boys, who are likely to enjoy the live-action manifestation of Avatar no matter how many of their parents find it dull and laughable.

WORST MOVIE OF 2010
How on earth did this ever get green lit we shall never know. It is seriously one of the worst movies i have ever seen! The acting in this movie (even from Dev Patel) is just down right terrible! The only reason the kid got to play Ang in the first place was because he sent in a video of him doing martial arts! HE DIDN'T EVEN AUDITION! And the person who played Katara shouldn't even be allowed to act she's so bad. The writing for the film is some of the worst i've heard my whole life. And some of the scenes in the movie are edited so poorly it made no sense! Even the cgi looked bad in it, not to mention this is the worst 3D i have ever seen in a movie! The only thing that was in 3D was the opening credits! Must i say more? DO NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE FOR ANY REASON WHAT SO EVER!

My kids love the Avatar cartoon series. This did not do it justice. Quite a boring movie and my kids even almost fell asleep. Horrible script and not funny. The effects I thought were good.

Horrible in Comparrison
I was saddened. No offence M. Night. The acting was horrible and it sounded like they were reading streight off of the script without stop. Noah Ringer showed a tad of potental I admit, his acting was good in some places, but the results still were a downer, the boy hardly smiled and his air bending looked like he was pretending to be an octopus. Katara was always so emotional, and she seemed more like a little girl than the 'motherly' figure. 'Soeka' (or as I call him) Soaks all of the fun out of everything, didn't match Sokka at all, he was FAR too serious, he always looked so angry and he hardly said ANY funny lines. And for Zuko, they must realize he growl in EVERY sentence he said in the cartoon, in the movie he sounded like he yelled everything. 'Eroh' I must say was a promising actor, but he wasn't as layed back, but the actor wasn't too bad. Although they need a chubbier actor, excuse me saying so, but Iroh was short and fat, not tall and skinny. None of the characters looked themselves, Aang sort of did, but not really, it looked like they obviously shaved his head. Katara and Sokka were Innuit, not pure as snow white, they could have hired African American's even for that role. The Fire Nation was Eastern Asian at least, not Middle Eastern. Especially Zuko in the show, he looked more Asian than most of them. As for the Earth Kingdom, they should just have all Asian actors for that one, not just TWO. They made Haru a little boy, and at the end, the girl that plays Azula is in her twenties, when Azula was only 14 years old, like Katara. If they could find someone around Katara's age to play the role, they can find a young girl that looks like Azula ('I' even look like Azula!) The affects were decent, but they were moving far too slow, they could have just rolled out of the way! The thing with the Fire benders needing a 'source of fire' is silly, if that was true, I don't think they would have gone as far as they did in the war. The people that were 'bending' looked more like they were just moving their arms all over, it hardly matched. You just couldn't relate to any of the characters, you could hardly grow on them. The set just seemed... cluttered. Little fun. Ozai didn't look scary, the characters look nothing like they should have, the names were said wrong, Appa looked like he was from "Where the Wild things Are" while Momo (his name was never said) looked like he came out of a video game. If they mess up Azula and Toph, I'm dropping it completely.

meh
I did not see the movie and i knew that it was bad. I had already seen some of the actors in other movies and all i could see was those actors as they were in the other movies and tv shows. I also thought the movie looked really serious were as the tv show was light and happy. I am glad i did not go and see the movie

Critics off base
Forget the critics. If you simply want entertainment, a basic good over evil storyline, this is it. My 8 year old really liked it. I thought it was fine too. Prince of Persia, though, was more fun.

If You Are An Avatar Fan, Do Not Watch the Movie
Okay, if you have seen Avatar: The Last Airbender the anime cartoon series, you will hate this movie! I wish I could rate it zero stars. It is hard for young kids to understand, and even the kids who loved the cartoons to stay interested. It is not intriguing, and I was very bored throughout the film. The actors acted cheesy, as though that was the only joke. There were no jokes by Sokka, the usual comic relief, ( was mispronounced Soe- kah) and the names were mispronounced. Uncle Iroh, another extremely funny character was old, skinny, and more evidently wise, (mispronounced Eer-oh). Aang, the head character, the Avatar, had no personality and love of fun. He was way too wise, and they pronounced his name awng, instead of ang. Zuko's personality was changed, the scenes were different, and I hated the way they destroyed the amazing cartoon series.

Clean and fun entertainment
Mom, dad, and both kids enjoyed seeing this movie in 3D. We can't wait for book 2 and book 3!

Serious Benders will be dissapointed.
I watched this as a fun-flick, since I knew they were more than likely going to mess up, and I was still a little shocked by the inconsistancy. Since I know no one will be reading this to read me ranting about those details that were missed in the film from the actual show, I'll cut to the chase. First, the acting. It was ok, except for one guy. Zuko. He was an absolute ham! A tip for anyone reading who want to act or direct in a movie one day; just because the character is confused and angry does NOT mean that he should yell and shake every chance he gets. Now for the film work. I love close-ups. They show you the character's true emotions! Now, when you do close-ups in almost every shot just for the fun of it, then I get upset. Now, most importantly, the Bending. It was accurate, and did incorporate many martial arts movements from the shows, but there was something missing. Maybe I just liked the cartoon bending more because it was so fuid and cool, whereas these were sometimes choppy and awkward. Overall, If you want to take your kids out to see this, alright. Just be prepared to explain the entire movie to them, seeing as they assumed everyone watched the series and went on with the film that way. If you are a serious Avatar fan, see it for the Banding and maybe just to see your favorite characters on the big screen. Just be ready to rant later about how many parts it missed. Honestly, if the people who made this had put half as much effort and time into it as those who made films like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars prequels, they would have nailed it. Sadly, they did not. Thanks for reading!

DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE
WORST MOVIE EVER!!!!! Please don't ever spend anything to see this movie! My kids are in LOVE with the cartoon and they practly cried when the movie was over because it was terible! The derictor changed the names of the main characters and took out all of the funny parts even me and my husband laughed at! Also I will point out almost none of the characters looked how they did in the cartoon. Please don't waste time on this fail of a film.

Hated it!!! I and my family are huge fans of the series. My husband and I went to see it. We were honestly interested to see how it would be adapted, perhaps some real Kung Fu forms, story line changes and twists, etc. The movie felt so hard and flat on its face we left after the first twenty minutes. Most of the actors need a lot more classes. Lame would be a good word for it. By the way Aang is now pronounced Ong and Sokka is now Soaka, Uncle Iro is Earo.

Just relax and enjoy it
I think people are often too hard on films critically. This may not be the Casablanca of PG films nor as good as the cartoon series, but so what? What it is, is entertaining, NOT hard to follow if you haven't watched the cartoon, not plotless (despite some reviews to the contrary), and did not put me as a parent in any tense moments worrying if my three boys would pick up anything inappropriate. WHAT A RELIEF THIS FILM WAS. Not even so much as a word "stupid" or "idiot" was uttered. Fight scenes not too graphic. And the relationship between Katara and her brother, Sokka [sp?] is one I want my boys to copy - i.e. "take care of each other." My kids like the cartoon series. They liked this movie too. They DID notice the different pronunciation of the names - they forgave the film anyway. I'm glad I can avoid the usual argument with my 8 year old (who we do not allow to see PG-13 movies) why he can't see a movie all his friends have. My 4 stars is as a parent, not movie critic (and I have 2 brothers with degrees in film). It was good, safe, harmless summer fun. ONE WARNING: My theater showed previews for Salt and Inception (!!?) before the film I spoke to the manager who said the studio sends it that way. Even those previews showed more shooting and violent car crashes than I would allow my 4 and 6 year old to watch. Maybe go for popcorn then.

Okay movie doesn't follow the plot of the cartoon.
Nothing is innaproprite in this movie but, it didn't exactly match the plot of the cartoon. It was a very serious movie that had little or no humor in it and the violence was was nothing too bad. It wasn't exactly boring but, a disappiontment for fans of the cartoon. I am a fan of the cartoon and when I saw the movie I was very disappointed with it...stick to the cartoon.

I almost ran out of the movie theater!
This movie was horrible!!! My friend and I love The Last Airbender series but this movie was not worth the time or money to see. They changed the names, more than half of the plot line, and in general the entire story! If you want to see this movie just watch the series instead because this movie butchered the entire show! I hated it!

Really? Avatar fans LIKE this!?
I'm sorry, but how? How can Avatar fans bring themselves to like this? It boggles the mind! Do these people have low standards? Do these people just think everything related to Avatar has to automatically be the best thing ever? If anything, this is a horrid, horrid disgrace to the original source material! I thought that this could work. When I saw that they were attempting to make the character designs accurate, I was expecting something good and true to the original, or at least capture the spirit of the original. (Like how Fantastic Mr. Fox deteriorates from its source but still carries the spirit of the book) We get none of that. Instead, we get a boring, BORING movie that has nothing that made me love the show so much.

Avatar Fans on Facebook don't call him Shamaladingdong for nothing
Worst movie I've ever seen. If I coud give it a 0/5, I would. Even if I hadn't been a big fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I would have utterly hated this movie. I tried not to be critical when I watched it, but it was so boring that I ended up pulling it to bits just to get some entertainment out of it. Characters were completely the wrong nationality. There was no humour, and I found the bending frustrating (for example, it took about 15 earthbenders stomping in unison to lift a medium sized rock and send it forward very, very slowly). Firebenders can rarely produce their own fire in the movie, which I find takes away from the whole fear-of-the-fire-nation factor. The only character that looked anything like their cartoon self was Yue, and she's only a minor character. Characters that seem unimportant at the start but are really important later, such as Suki or Bumi, don't feature at all. The movie doesn't exactly follow the original storyline. I have the entire 3 series of the cartoon on DVD, so I know what's supposed to be where, and what becomes important later on. They don't just skip parts, they replace things that, in my opinion, shouldn't be messed with (eg. instead of the current Avatar asking past Avatars for guidence, they ask spirits). Don't bother with the movie - just stick to the cartoons. The characters are better formed and there is a lot of comedy.
